Braxton D’Urso is set to take on the nation’s best young runners later this month when he travels to the Australian Little Athletics Championships in South Australia.
D’Urso, who now goes to school in Brisbane, will be representing Cassowary Coast Little Athletics when he competes in the under-13 boys 400m event.
His race will come under unusual circumstances, with it being more than six months since he last ran this specific distance.
“I qualified last year at regionals. Our regionals were in September last year, so I haven’t run that event since then,” D’Urso said.
“(I’m) a bit nervous, I don’t really run 400 metres too often.”
D’Urso will compete at the Australian Little Athletics Championships – which will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV – on April 26 and 27.
He has primarily been training for the 100 and 200m sprints in the meantime, but said he’s turned his attention to preparing for the 400 since he found out about his qualification.
While it’s not his number one sport, D’Urso’s ability has led him to continue competing on the track.
“I love my footy most of all, but I guess I have a bit of a talent for running so I’ve kept at it,” he said.
“I’m just going to focus on enjoying the whole experience and meeting the other competitors.
“It’s probably my last chance to represent Cassowary Coast now that I live in Brisbane so I’m just hoping to do them proud.”
