George Kambosos is set for another world title run and Skye Nicolson could land a rematch on the same card, but the biggest winner from Saturday night’s fights in Sydney is Queensland’s brave late-notice replacement Jake Wyllie.
The 24-year-old slugger, stepped in and saved the card on just five days’ notice after Daud Yordan pulled out, and pushed Kambosos to the limit in a 12-round battle that left them bruised and bloodied.
Kambosos just needed a win to book a title fight with 140-pound IBF champion Richardson Hitchens in America in June, but promoter Eddie Hearn will be sweating on the cut on his forehead – the result of a head clash – to make the fight happen.

Hitchens, who beat Aussie Liam Paro for the title in December, is signed to fight on June 21, with Team Kambosos racing the clock to be healed and ready to fight in 13 weeks’ time.
“That is the date, and it’s not moveable, and that is now the challenge for George,” Hearn said. “We can’t move it back three or four weeks – that is the date.”
Kambosos will have four weeks of no contact training, but is confident the cut will be fine by June.
“This is very small, we didn’t even get it stitched up,” Kambosos said. “Just a bit of glue.
“When it landed, there was a lot of blood. To be honest, I thought it might be a Tim Tszyu cut, it was pouring everywhere.”
Wyllie received a standing ovation for his brave performance, and although he was disappointed at the result, will likely get another shot on a future Matchroom card.

“I know he’s tough, and I know he can punch but I didn’t know if he could stand up to the clean shots, firepower and speed of Kambosos – especially for the first six rounds – but he did,” Hearn said. “Those kinds of nights can give you the confidence to realise you’re a world class fighter.
“I love the kid. I’m in love with him already. What a great story.
“What a nice kid, what a fighter. He’s 24. What impressed me was standing up to the shots.
“His confidence kept growing and in the 12th round he was fresh as a daisy. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was unbelievable.”
Meanwhile, Nicolson could land a rematch with Brown on a Hitchens-Kambosos undercard.
“I didn’t think she was at her best, to be honest – I didn’t think she boxed her best, but I thought she could’ve edged the fight,” he said. “I thought it was a weird scorecard from Phil Austin.
“He gave Tiara Brown the last five rounds.
“Not ordered, not officially. It would sit well on the undercard of George’s fight actually.”
