Tim Tszyu reveals his celebration plans ahead of Brian Mendoza fight

Tim Tszyu has revealed how he plans on celebrating the defence of his WBO super-welterweight world title against Brian Mendoza.

Beat up Brian Mendoza. Then go fishing.

That’s Tim Tszyu’s bold plan for fight day as he prepares for the first defence of his WBO super welterweight world title on Sunday.

A confident Tszyu revealed his post-fight plans after weighing in at 69.40kg on Saturday morning.

Fishing is rapidly becoming Tszyu’s signature way to celebrate, after he was photographed wetting a line barely 45 minutes after finishing his post-fight press conference following his 77-second destruction of Carlo Ocampo in June.

The picture went viral, and Tszyu even posted another photo of himself fishing from the same jetty earlier this week.

“One hundred per cent, straight after the fight, nothing changes, it’s the same thing I always do,” Tszyu said when asked whether a spot of fishing was on the cards after the fight.

Mendoza, who weighed in at 69.85kg, has similarly low-key celebration plans if he wins, but the American says there will be less fishing and more eating.

“I’m going to just be with my family, my small circle is all over here and I think I want to get some pizza, man,” Mendoza told this masthead. “I just want something delicious, maybe something deep-fried.

“I just want some good food and my family, man, that’s all I need.”

A year and a half after hiring a personal chef – Fight Chef Omar – Tszyu claimed he’d had the easiest weight cut of his career.

“I’m not too angry, I’m nice and relaxed, and for the first time ever I didn’t have to go to the sauna,” he said. “Usually I’m roasting myself in the sauna and doing it hard, but this time it’s been much easier.

“Kudos to fight chef Omar, he’s really helped me out and it’s been a game-changer.”

Tszyu and Mendoza engaged in an intense weigh-in face-off in sweltering conditions on the Gold Coast. They exchanged a quick word with one another before being separated, but neither revealed what was said.

“I can’t even remember,” Tszyu said, while Mendoza was just focused on himself. “I’m just locked in, ready and I’m just dying to get in there now,” Mendoza said. “I’m not even focusing or listening to anything right now. I’m just so locked in and focused. I’m just worried about me and where my mindset is at.

“I’ve been the underdog before, the world is against me, but we’re here again and nobody outside the ring can fight for you.

“It’s going to be, ‘And New’ tomorrow.”

Tszyu is also surrounded by family on the Gold Coast, with grandfather Boris, uncle Igor and brother Nikita all present for the weigh ins.

His old man isn’t here, but Tszyu said they’d spoken during the week and Kostya gave him the same piece of advice he always does.

“It’s simple: don’t get hit,” he said. “When they mention the name Tszyu, they’re going to say that it’s the greatest boxing family that’s ever lived.”
