‘Bandwagoner’: Tim Tszyu proves he’s an NRL traitor with shameless jersey swap

Australian boxing star Tim Tszyu had the rugby league world in stitches after he proved he’s a bandwagoner with a hilarious act.

Australian boxing star Tim Tszyu has left rugby league fans in stitches after shamelessly swapping NRL allegiances on live TV.

Tszyu, who is preparing for his first world title fight next weekend, was speaking to Fox League during halftime of the Round 1 NRL clash between South Sydney and Cronulla on Saturday night.

Just as he was finishing up speaking to the commentary panel, injured Sharks halfback Nicho Hynes popped into view and held a Sharks jersey over the Rabbitohs top Tszyu was wearing.

Tszyu had a giggle but then proceeded to put the Sharks jersey on before posing for a photo with Hynes.

Fox League’s Yvonne Sampson said: “Speaking of bandwagons, the Sharks’ newest fan Tim Tszyu!

“He said I’m a bandwagoner and who wouldn’t back Nicho Hynes, our Dally M medal winner. Not playing tonight but still flying the flag for the Cronulla Sharks.”

Cooper Cronk told Tszyu: “Whoever wins tonight you can wear the jersey.”

It wasn’t quite as bad as swapping a Sharks jersey for a Dragons one, but it’s close.

Social media predictably had a chuckle at the sight of Tszyu wearing two different jerseys on the sidelines of the clash, which the Rabbitohs won 27-18 at Shark Park.

Tszyu has long been a Bunnies supporter but given he trains at a gym in Rockdale in Sydney’s South, it would be understandable for him to have an allegiance to the Dragons or the Sharks.

He could even support the Knights if he wanted, given his family’s success in the boxing ring in Newcastle, which has been dubbed ‘Tszyucastle’ over the years.

Tszyu admitted he is a shameless rugby league bandwagoner.

“I actually jumped the bandwagon when they (Souths) started winning the grand final,” he confessed.

“I used to go for the Newcastle Knights and you know Newcastle, they weren’t that good.

“I’m a bandwagon jumper. I really like Latrell (Mitchell) and Cody (Walker), they’re part of the No Limit family. We’ve got a good connection with them.”

Tszyu is gearing up for his first world title fight against American Tony Harrison at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena next Sunday March 12.

The 28-year-old will be vying to claim the WBO superwelterweight belt from Harrison, who is the only boxer to beat unified champion Jermell Charlo.

“The hard work’s done,” Tszyu said.

“I’m ready to go. My hands are quite itchy now.

“That’s the plan. That’s the best thing about boxing. When you get a loud mouth, you can smack em a few times in the chin and their mouth stops talking after that.”
