WNBA Draft: Aussie college star Georgia Amoore to join Jade Melbourne at Washington Mystics

Ballarat-born Georgia Amoore is WNBA bound after Washington Mystics selected the college star with the sixth pick at the draft. And Aussie Mystic Jade Melbourne is excited to reunite with the fellow ‘country girl.’

'I got a little bit of that dog in me'

Australian basketball star Jade Melbourne is “pumped” to have fellow country Victorian Georgia Amoore joining her in the big league after the Washington Mystics selected the guard with the sixth pick in the 2025 WNBA draft.

Amoore, 24, became the highest Australian WNBA selection since Liz Cambage was called out with the second pick in 2011 and has been touted as a future Opals point guard after an impressive five years in the US college system.

A star guard for Kentucky Wildcats and previously Virginia Tech, Amoore averaged 19.6 points and 6.9 assists in her final college year, a stat line that has her up in a similar realm as generational WNBA talent Cailtin Clark.

And standing at just 5’6, the Ballarat-born draftee has had to find different ways to make an impact on court.

“For as long as people have been calling me too short, I’ve been working on how to counteract that,” Amoore said at the draft.

“I know that I have to work in different ways, use my brain a little bit more, but with my competitive background I think I have a bit of a dog in me that keeps me fighting.

“Ballarat, that’s a long way away but I’ve taken every opportunity that’s opened up, made the most of it and now I’m here.”

Junior state league teammates reunited on the biggest stage, Melbourne is excited for the “two country girls” to take on the biggest basketball league in the world.

“We played Vic Country together and now all of a sudden we’re teammates now in America,” Melbourne told Code Sports.

“We’ve had to come to the other side of the world to team up again.

“We’ve all been able to watch her make a name for herself, over in the college system so now it’s really exciting that I get to play with her again.”

“Georgia will feel right at home.”

Upon her arrival back to Washington on Monday AEST, Mystics coach Sydney Johnson was quick to pick Melbourne’s brain for insights about Amoore as a person.

“I’ve been in a locker room with her since juniors, she’s fun, she loves basketball and she’s a pretty laid back person,” Melbourne told the coach.

Amoore joins the Mystics off the back of collegiate accolades including being named the WBCA Coaches’ All-American in 2025, triple First-team inclusion (2023, 2024, 2025) and an ACC tournament MVP (2023).
