Two days after draining the match-winner against Denver, Brooklyn Nets shooting guard Caris LeVert has made headlines again - but there were no heroics this time.
Chasing down a fast break against the Timberwolves, the 24-year-old attempted to swat away a driving Josh Okogie but failed to stick the landing, forcing his ankle into a right angle.
The sickening injury sent a hush around the Target Center with players from both teams visibly in shock.
Play was halted for several minutes while LeVert received on-court medical attention before being stretchered off and leaving the arena in an ambulance.
The incident revived memories of Boston Celtics star Gordon Hayward’s horror dislocated ankle at the start of last season.
Before the injury, Hayward was labelled as Boston’s great hope for the 2017/18 season.
And like Hayward, LeVert has been a cornerstone of Brooklyn’s full-court game.
On Twitter, famed NBA guru Adrian Wojnarowski lamented the timing and shocking nature of the injury: “Sight of Caris LeVert’s leg injury in Minnesota shook everyone on court. He has rapidly emerged into the cornerstone player of Nets rebuild - and been spectacular this season. He fought foot injuries at U of Michigan. He’s been everything they’ve wanted in a young player.”
Wojnarowski then gave an update on LeVert: “He left arena in ambulance for a nearby Minneapolis hospital/trauma center to undergo evaluation on his right leg.”
