Brendan Teys puts his hand up to retain Adelaide 36ers NBL captaincy ahead of player vote

BRENDAN Teys says he would love to retain the captaincy at the Adelaide 36ers this season ahead of a player vote on the team’s leadership in coming weeks.
But the consummate team man says he will fully support whoever is in the role if it’s not him for a second consecutive year after he took over from Mitch Creek last season.
“I loved my role being captain last year, I had a great time with it and it was a huge honour for me because there have been some great captains of Adelaide,” Teys said.
“I think we’ve got a team orientation day in the next few weeks where everyone will vote who they want as captain and I’d love to do it again but absolutely I’ll support whoever it is.”
After clean-sweeping the NBL pre-season Blitz on the weekend with wins over Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, the Sixers are back on their home court on Tuesday night with a practice game against Cairns.
“We want to put in a good show, off the back of a good Blitz it would be nice to continue in that winning manner and do a job against Cairns but they’re a tough, talented team,” Teys said.
“It will be a good opportunity to see where we’re at and work on a few things going into the USA trip and the start of the season.”
Teys said recruits Adris De Leon, Jacob Wiley, Jack McVeigh and Harry Froling made a smooth transition into Adelaide’s team on the weekend. Wiley hauled in 15 rebounds against United while De Leon had 23 points against Perth.
“The recruits have slotted in nicely, Joey (Wright) tells them over and over to just go out and be themselves and it’s up to the guys who have been there before to work in around them, so they’re doing a good job of that,” Teys said.
“Everyone bought into the system offensively and defensively and accepted that some games might be theirs and some will be another person’s time to step up.
“We did really well on the weekend but there is a bunch of stuff we can still work on to improve, we know we haven’t reached our full potential yet.”
Tip-off for the 36ers’ clash with Cairns at Adelaide Arena is 6.30pm on Tuesday night and the Adelaide Lightning will play a curtain-raiser against North Adelaide’s under-16 boys team from 4.30pm.
