Sydney Kings star Andrew Bogut is aiming to play against Melbourne United tomorrow despite tweaking his back during Friday night’s big win over Illawarra.

Bogut sent a scare through the Kings’ camp when he looked to have strained his back after going up for a dunk during the third quarter.

The former NBA champion retreated to the bench to stretch his back on a pilates mat before returning to help Sydney finish off a 23-point win.

Kings coach Will Weaver did his best to deflect questions about Bogut’s back after the Illawarra victory.

Asked about the big man’s status after he clearly grabbed at his back in pain following a dunk, Weaver said: “I think he is fine. I respect your medical accruement but I didn’t see it, so as far as I know it is fine.”

Bogut has managed his body for the majority of the season following a full-on off-season schedule in the NBA and at the World Cup in China.

In his recent column, he acknowledged that he is working hard behind the scenes to take the court every week.

“I’m not going to lie and say that I feel fantastic – I’m 35 with a long injury list – but it is just a matter of doing things away from the court like I always have,” Bogut said.

“Some fun, some not. Ice baths, massage, pool sessions, physio and acupuncture just to name a few.

“I’ve played more basketball than ever the past few years with no real breaks, and to be honest I’m just trying to manage it as best as I can.

“In saying that, I haven’t been hurt in the NBL where I’ve missed a game. Not to say like most professional athletes, I have definitely played through a few injuries.”

Bogut’s health will be crucial for Sydney to claim this year’s championship. The veteran big man is still the NBL’s best centre, especially on the defensive end.

Sydney’s dominant win over Illawarra confirmed their place in the finals.

The Kings are the first team in NBL history to lead the league from round one to round 17. This is an impressive achievement given this season has been one of the most competitive NBL campaigns we’ve seen.

Sydney are well placed heading into the finals but they can’t underestimate defending champions Perth, especially at home.

Star Wildcats guard Bryce Cotton is still arguably the league’s best player, and someone who has proven he can carry his team past any obstacle.

The Kings host arch rivals United at Qudos Bank Arena from 5pm.
