Australian surf life saving championships 2022: U17, U19 teen stars from NSW, Queensland at Aussies

They are the next generation preparing to stride into the limelight in surf life saving circles. Meet the best under 17 and under 19 athletes at Aussies 2022 from great rivals NSW and Queensland.

They are the young athletes ready to explode in surf sport.

Swimmers, runners, paddlers and surf skiers expected to make a splash at the Australian surf life saving championships on the Gold Coast this week.

We take a look at some of the names expected to light up at the annual event which has attracted a record 7000 plus competitors with the U17 and U19 comp kicking off Wednesday.

NSW U17 AND U19 SURF LIFE SAVING STARS TO WATCH AT AUSSIES 2022

SAMUEL BRAUN, NORTH BONDI

This U19s competitor was part of the North Bondi open men’s Taplin team that made history last year by winning gold. He is a strong board paddler and will compete in both the U19 and open age groups.

SAXON COATES, SWANSEA BELMONT

The U19 board champions and a great ski paddler. Will be a young gun to watch closely at the event.

LILY FINATI, NORTH BONDI

Lily made her debut in the Nutri-Grain Ironwoman Series this year and is looking fit and strong ahead of the Aussies. Finati will race in both the U19 and open categories and is expected to be a major force.

Zara Foran is also a rising star of NSW surf life saving.

ZARA FORAN, SWANSEA BELMONT

Foran will compete in the U17 and open age groups and was a strong contender in the U15 competition last year where she finished second in the U15 iron and won gold in the board race.

SID FORBES, COOKS HILL

A youngster who is expected to turn heads again after showing his skills with a second in the U15 board last year.

TILLA GARRETT, MANLY

This young life saver from Manly loves a wave and will do well in these conditions in her U17 events.

ELLA GARRETT, MANLY

The older sister of Tilla and competing in the U19 competitions. Her strength is craft and she’s shown plenty of improvement in recent times.

ETHAN HAMILTON, SWANSEA BELMONT

Competing in the U17s he also tried out for the Nutri-Grain series at trials last year.

FLYNN HAMILTON, SWANSEA BELMONT

The current U17 board champion. Did well at the Summer of Surf series where he beat Matt Bevilacqua in a sprint up the beach.

ELIZA JOHNSON, SWANSEA BELMONT

She finished second in the U19 ski last year at Aussies. She and Johnson will attempt to defend their U19 Taplin crown.

CARTER HARRISON, MANLY

The younger brother of Piper Harrison. He is tall and athletic and a good paddler competing in the U17s.

CONNER MAGGS, NEWPORT

One to watch. He won the U15 ocean swim, surf race and finished second place in the ironman last year. He also won the U15 board rescue, cameron relay and board relay. he is now racing in the U17s.

KURT MURPHY

A board paddler who has a strong history of performing well at big event including the Aussies.

ALEXANDRA TAIT, NORTH BONDI

This U19 athlete is in good from on the board and has won a few race this year including a round at the Summer of Surf. With some solid training this summer under her belt, she’ll be one to watch

JAKE WALKER, NORTH BONDI

Son of 1996 Olympic paddler Jimmy Walker. This teen has great knowledge of the surf and is a strong board paddler

CHARLOTTE WARD, MANLY

A great swimmer with a great reach who is expected to make a splash at Aussies. She is also good on the board and competing in U17s.

LANI WALKER, REDHEAD

Won a number of iron races in local events and at the Summer of Surf series this season. An all-rounder to watch out for.

BELLA WILLIAMS, SWANSEA BELMONT

Will have benefited from a short stint competing in the Nutri-Grain iron series this season. The U19 swim champ.

QUEENSLAND U17 AND U19 SURF LIFE SAVING STARS TO WATCH AT AUSSIES 2022

RYLEY HARLAND, NORTHCLIFFE

Part of the U15 Northcliffe surf team that raced away with the gold last year at Aussies. He also raced in a number of individual finals and will be racing up in the U17s this year,

RILEY BRENNAN, CURRUMBIN

Was a stand out in the U15s racing last Aussies and finished 3rd in the U17 Youth Challenge at the Coolangatta Gold. Testing his skills in seven events across the U17s and U19s.

JOSEPH MCMENAMIN, ALEXANDRA HEADLAND

A strong swimmer who has events like the surf race and surf teams races on his hit-list. He will also race board and ski events.

AUDEN PARISH, NORTHCLIFFE

Won the Nutri-Grain Next Gen Series to book his spot in the next Nutri-Grain iron series. Trains alongside Matt Bevilacqua, Matt Poole and Joe Collins.

KAI HARLAND, NORTHCLIFFE

Kai Harland will also be one to watch with more than 15 events. These include the board race, surf race, ocean swim and prestigious Australian ironman

LILLY O’SULLIVAN, BURLEIGH HEAD

Has the experience of making her debut in the Nutri-Grain series this year where she finished 18th overall. The Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park junior is looking for a big Aussies campaign, and will wear the black and green cap with pride.

GRACE OTTO, SUNSHINE BEACH

Coached by former ironman Josh Minogue, she won the Nutri-Grain Next Gen Series. The result will give her some confidence as she heads into the Aussies.

LUCY DERBYSHIRE, NORTHCLIFFE

Originally from South Australia, she moved to the Gold Coast to pursue her ironwoman dreams. In the last series she finished fourth in one of the rounds.

CALLUM BRENNAN, CURRUMBIN

The older brother of Riley Brennan will be one to watch in the U19s racing. In 2021, Callum donned the green and white cap, qualifying for a number of finals in both the individual and team events.

JAMIE PERKINS, NORTHCLIFFE

A rising star in the pool and ocean, she raced the trials for the Tokyo Olympic Games. She is also a star in the surf, winning four gold medals last year, including the U17 ironwoman title.

JASMINE RAYWARD, NORTH BURLEIGH

Will test herself in the U19 double Ski, open mixed double ski, U17 single ski, U17 ironwoman, U19 board rescue, U17 and U19 Taplin, U17 and U19 board relay and U17 surf and board races.

KIARA RYCHVALSKY, MAROOCHYDORE

Kiara is a rising football star from the Sunshine Coast who will compete in the beach events at the 2022 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. She’ll be one to watch in the U19 beach flags and sprint.

The U17 and U19 racing runs alongside the open competition from Wednesday to Sunday.
