Tyler Skaggs, a 27-year-old starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, died in Texas on Monday, the team said.

Skaggs was discovered unconscious and unresponsive in his Hilton hotel room at around 2.18pm, according to the Southlake Police Department in Texas.

Skaggs was found unresponsive and declared dead at the scene.

“Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels Family,” read a statement from the team.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carli and his entire family during this devastating time.”

No foul play was suspected and a cause of death was not revealed.

The pitcher started in a game against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.

Skaggs had a 7-7 record in 15 games with the Angeles this year. The starting pitcher recorded a 4.29 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 79 innings. He was drafted in the first round by the Angels in 2009.

The game was cancelled just a few hours before it was scheduled to start.

The team canceled its scheduled game on Monday night against the Texas Rangers.

The Rangers also released a statement paying their respects to Skaggs.

Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert Manfred Jr also released a statement confirming the horrific news.

“I am deeply saddened by today’s tragedy in Texas,” he said.

All of us at Major League Baseball extend our deepest condolences to Tyler’s wife Carli, their family, their friends and all of his Angels’ teammates and colleagues. We will support the Angels’ organisation through this most difficult period, and we will make a variety of resources available to Tyler’s teammates and other members of the baseball family.”

Former New York Yankee star Phil Hughes wrote an emotional Twitter tribute to Skaggs upon learning of his death.

He wrote: “I just had lunch with Tyler a couple weeks ago. We talked pitching, life. He was so excited about the season.

“Absolutely gutted. I’m sick.”

The incident takes place ten years after rookie Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others were killed by a suspected drunk driver.

The driver in the Adenhart crash was convicted of murder and sentenced to 51 years in prison in 2010.

Skaggs was born in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Woodland Hills, in the far western part of the sprawling San Fernando Valley. He graduated from Santa Monica High School in 2009, when the Angels drafted him in the first round.

The Angels traded Skaggs to Arizona in 2010, and he started his big-league career with 13 appearances over two seasons for the Diamondbacks. The Angels reacquired him in December 2013, and he has won 25 games over five seasons with the club.
