Woodville-West Torrens look to the future after reserves and under-18 premiership wins

WOODVILLE-WEST Torrens' league season might have ended in disappointment, but its reserves and under-18s have given the Eagles hope for the future.

WOODVILLE-WEST Torrens' indifferent league season ended in disappointment when it was knocked out of the finals in straight sets.

But the Eagles will be able to take some solace out of their reserves and under-18 sides winning premierships on October 6 and claiming the Stanley H Lewis trophy.

The club beat North Adelaide 9.15 (69) to 8.7 (55) in the under-18s decider before backing up with an 8.6 (54) to 6.12 (48) triumph over Glenelg in the reserves final.

It is the second straight under-18 flag for the club but its reserves had struggled in recent seasons, finishing seventh in 2012 and second-bottom in 2011.

Eagles talent manager and under-18 coach Shane Grimm said this past season's premiership squad was "completely different" to the one that won last year.

Only four players won both under-18 grand finals and about 17 are still eligible to play next year, Grimm said.

"It was probably a better effort this year," Grimm said.

"This year's group was a lot younger than last year's group.

"This year we had two under-16s and quite a few under-17 kids as well.

"Our (club) depth has shown up to be really good."

Grimm said Malcolm Karpany, who was the Eagles' best in the grand final, Cameron Giles, Luke Dunstan and Riley Knight were emerging as AFL draft prospects.

He said a handful of players from this year's under-18 squad could play league football next season.

"We had seven players in our league team this year that played under-18s last year and we've been regularly getting two, three or four players drafted as well."

In other Eagles news, league players Aaron Day, 24, and Daniel Kirk, 30, have announced their retirements.

Day played 58 games in four years for the club after crossing from Glenelg.

Kirk finishes on 109 games from 12 seasons.
