THE GWS Giants have their eyes on the coveted No.1 pick at next month’s AFL draft after midfielder Will Setterfield requested a trade to Carlton.
If fellow unsettled Giant Dylan Shiel chooses the Blues as his preferred destination the pair could form part of a packaged deal for the first selection.
LIVE TRADES: DON’T MISS A MOVE ON DAY TWO
Shiel is still mulling over a potential move but Setterfield and GWS ruckman Rory Lobb didn’t hesitate to announce their desire to quit the Giants as the first day of the trade period kicked off in Melbourne.

Lobb has nominated Fremantle as his preferred option after meeting with both West Australian clubs in recent weeks.
The Giants released a statement saying both players are contracted for next year and they would now work with the Blues and Dockers towards the best outcome for the club.
“Lobb is contracted for the 2019 season while Setterfield is signed to the end of the 2020 season,” the statement said.
“Should a suitable trade not be reached, the club expects both players to remain Giants next year.”
Setterfield was taken with pick No.5 in the 2016 draft but has played just two games in his first two seasons after badly hurting his ankle last year and rupturing his ACL during this year’s pre-season.
If he and Shiel end up at the Blues they won’t be short of ex-GWS teammates with Matthew Kennedy, Jed Lamb, Caleb Marchbank, Andrew Phillips, Jarrod Pickett and Lachie Plowman all finding a new home at Ikon Park.
Carlton list manager Stephen Silvagni was the Giants list manager for the first three seasons of the expansion club.
The Swans’ first day of the trade period concentrated on the Dan Hannebery to St Kilda and Gary Rohan to Geelong requests.
Football Manager Tom Harley and List Manager Kinnear Beatson met with both clubs but didn’t come to an immediate agreement.
“Both are all progressing in the right space and we don’t see anything too untoward with both of those,” Harley said.
“I am sure there will be further discussions later on this afternoon and as the days progress.”
Harley confirmed the Swans interest in North Melbourne midfielder Ryan Clarke and didn’t rule out a straight swap for Sydney defender Nic Newman.
“We are aware of North’s interest in Nic and they are aware of our interest in Ryan,” Harley said.
“It would be convenient, those straight swaps don’t happen quite as much as they should perhaps. But time will tell.”
In other trades Geelong’s Lincoln McCarthy is off the Brisbane Lions and Richmond’s Anthony Miles and Corey Ellis are heading to the Gold Coast Suns.
