What do you get for your AFL club membership in 2019?

From match day experiences to merchandise freebies, footy clubs are pulling out all the stops to get members on board for 2019. Here’s the ultimate guide to this year’s AFL and AFLW membership deals.

Free upgrades, customised family packages and AFLW match day experiences are just some of the many 2019 AFL club membership offerings.

Clubs are hoping to build on their 2018 membership total, which reached one million for the first time, in part due to 2017 premiers Richmond being the first team with 100,000 members (100,726).

A Herald Sun investigation found AFL clubs offer a mind-boggling array of packages, with the most popular 11-game home general admission (GA) membership still good value.

HOW AFL MEMBERSHIP COMPARES WORLDWIDE

AFL 2019 PRE—SEASON INJURIES

SUPERCOACH: JONATHAN BROWN NAMES HIS TEAM

They range from $190 at Brisbane to $260 at Adelaide. Junior GA memberships vary greatly in price and inclusions, ranging from $51 at Brisbane to $130 at Fremantle.

Most clubs are becoming more creative.

SuperCoach Phantom

Carlton, which reached 40,000 members by Christmas for the first time, gave those who renewed by January 31 free upgrades, while Melbourne fans who joined by January 22 entered a draw for an interstate footy trip.

AFLW ROUND TWO INS AND OUTS

Sydney fans can now mix and match any categories to make up a family membership, such as grandparents, extra children and neighbours.

AFLW PACKAGES

Clubs with AFLW teams, and in some cases VFLW teams, are also generally widening their offerings.

Adelaide has several AFLW packages with merchandise and perks such as a training session, on field match day experiences and a chance to join an exclusive game day player guernsey presentation.

Carlton, Geelong and Gold Coast have $100 AFLW memberships that include three AFL games, Hawthorn has a VFLW membership and Richmond is introducing a Women’s Football Foundation membership.

Collingwood, however, doesn’t have an AFLW membership this season.

“All Collingwood football memberships include support for the club’s AFLW program,” a spokesman said.

GRAND FINAL ACCESS

The cheapest package with guaranteed access to buy an AFL Grand Final ticket if your team makes it — the holy grail for many fans — generally costs from $203 (Brisbane) to $810 (Collingwood).

But premiership success means Richmond’s cheapest option is the $1995 for Club XI membership — cheaper versions have sold out.

AFLX DRAFT: EVERY PLAYER LISTED

Fremantle offers a Grand Final upgrade for just $60 on top of a regular membership, but they are sold out with a waiting list, so the cheapest option is the $1039 Premiership Terrace membership.

It also includes padded reserved seats with lift access, exclusive use of the ‘Premiership Terrace’, Supporters Club access, Docker magazine and 10 per cent team store discount.

Reigning premier West Coast has sold out of all Grand Final Guarantee packages.

MEMBERSHIP NUMBERS

Club membership numbers are also a talking point. Adelaide adds free ‘We Fly as One’ members to its tally, but the AFL does not officially count them.

Last April the Crows claimed a record 82,699 members, but that was reduced to 64,739 after the AFL audit. The club recently said it had 77,504 members already in 2019, but that included the freebies.

The AFL used to officially count club memberships that cost at least $50 and provided key contact details, but this has widened to include a range of factors rather than just price.

However, it confirmed that the free Adelaide memberships will not count this year. And despite what some people like to claim about rival clubs, pet memberships aren’t counted either.

“Members play a significant role in our game,” an AFL spokesman said. “In recent years, clubs have been able to offer various membership packages to ensure access and flexibility for their members while attracting new fans.

“As a result, the AFL has made some adjustments around what qualifies as a member.”

SUPERCOACH: AFL DEFENDERS NO-ONE TALKS ABOUT

AFL Fans Association president Gerry Eeman said membership growth over the past 20 years had been nothing short of staggering.

“The 1999 total was 441,000 and only one club — Adelaide — had over 40,000 members,” he said. “The 2018 figures demonstrate how passionate many footy fans are.”
