1 — Tom Mitchell isn’t home — yet
Don’t get us wrong. We expect star Hawk Tom Mitchell to be wearing the Brownlow Medal at the end of the night. But it isn’t going to be easy. At Round 20, his price was crunched into $1.30 and we agreed, he was a genuine lock. However, he isn’t going to poll in the final three weeks of the season. And there is one man who is going to be charging home like an absolute steam train, meaning Mitchell is going to need a solid lead or things could get very tight, very quickly.
2 — Watch out for Dusty
From rounds 7 to 15, Dustin Martin can basically duck out of the room and take a break. He will be seeing minimal TV time during that nine round period. However, his start to the year and his blistering finish will ensure he is in the mix. From rounds one to six we’ve got him landing 10 votes. From rounds 16 to 23 we’ve got him picking up 15 — yes 15! — votes. If for any reason Mitchell doesn’t poll as expected, the back-to-back dream is well and truly alive.
3 — Why we are nervous about the ruckmen
We’ve got both Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn finishing in the top 10. But given the recent history of ruckmen polling poorly in the Brownlow, we are nervous. How can you not be? The fact is, the umpires have been overlooking rucks for a long time. Gawn polled three Brownlow votes last year. Yikes! Grundy has nine votes for his career. Double yikes!
4 — How will the umps judge Cripps?
He is one of the brightest young stars in the competition. But how many times will Patrick Cripps poll three votes after the Blues have been smashed by more than 12 goals? Can you really argue that the best player on the ground was on the wrong end of a 100 point loss? He is going to need everything to go right for him to be a chance. And we mean EVERYTHING!
5 — It could have been an awkward finish
He was the favourite before he was suspended and with good reason. Nat Fyfe was well on his way to a second Brownlow Medal. We expect the star Docker to pick up a whopping 20 votes despite only playing in 15 matches. He would have been ineligible but it would have been enthralling to watch Fyfe go head-to-head with Mitchell and Martin in the final rounds.
