The SA Amateur Football League won’t change schedule for ‘boutique’ Kilburn-Aldinga Adelaide Oval game

THE SAAFL will not change its fixture to accommodate a one-off game between struggling club Kilburn and southern league counterpart Aldinga at Adelaide Oval.

THE SA Amateur Football League will not change its fixture to accommodate a one-off game between struggling club Kilburn and southern league counterpart Aldinga at Adelaide Oval.

The AFL match day curtain raiser, reportedly mooted by Port Adelaide to assist the battling teams, was discussed by the amateur league’s management committee last night.

Amateur league chief executive John Kernahan said the only way it would happen was on the June long weekend when there were no local matches scheduled.

If the game is proposed for a Saturday, Kernahan said the league would not re-schedule Kilburn’s regular season game for another date.

He said the possibility of the AFL curtain raiser happening on a Sunday had not even been discussed.

“We’re not going to interfere with our football season for a boutique match,” Kernahan said.

“If they want to play on the June long weekend, that’s their business.

“But the first we knew of it was reading (a newspaper) article last Friday.

“We don’t know the full details and we don’t know what any plans are, so until anyone does ... the management committee suggested there was nothing to consider.”

The Power hosts St Kilda in a Saturday twilight fixture on the June 7 long weekend, but is believed to have committed to hosting the SA Women’s Football League in the curtain raiser.

Meanwhile amateur league delegates last night voted in favour of Kilburn’s request to remain in division three this year, despite three 300-plus point hidings this season.

“As per Kilburn’s wishes, the vote was to support their intentions to stay in division three,” Kernahan said.

“What takes precedence in this decision is what Kilburn wants. And they want to stay in division three and battle it out.”
