The AFL Integrity Unit has made a decision on Liam Ryan’s altercation last month

The AFL Integrity Unit has made a decision on Liam Ryan’s involvement in a fight outside a music festival last month.

West Coast star Liam Ryan is free to play for the Indigenous All-Stars team after an AFL investigation into a video allegedly showing him in a fight at a music festival cleared him of any wrong doing.

The AFL Integrity Unit, in tandem with WA Police, determined Ryan to be de-escalating the situation after he and the people he was with were victims of an attack by a larger group.

The investigation found Ryan tried to walk away from the group before being confronted.

WA Police told the AFL they would take no action against Ryan and that he was cooperative with the investigation.

In a statement released late on Monday, the AFL said WA police confirmed that officers were in the area at the time of the fight and that Ryan was being treated as “a witness to an incident” where his group was pursued by a larger group.

The incident resulted in one of his female companions being assaulted and suffering facial injuries.

“It was determined that Ryan attempted to de-escalate the incident and walk away from the group before being confronted, leading to the fight that was captured on social media,” the statement said.

“WA Police have advised the AFL that they intend to take no action against Ryan as a result of the matter and that he was cooperative and assisted the police by attending and providing police statements.

“It should also be noted that Ryan was not drinking on the night and was driving.

“The AFL will take no further action.”

Ryan, 28, was unharmed in the incident and fronted the media promoting the Indigenous All Stars match the following morning.

A 2018 premiership player with the Eagles, Ryan has played 105 games since being drafted 2017.
