West Coast has released a new, reworked club song released that features a powerful tribute to the Eagles’ indigenous heritage.

After a tweak of logo and club colours in 2017, a move to Perth Stadium in 2018 and a shift of training bases in 2019, the Eagles on Tuesday released an updated version of the club song, which has been written, composed and produced by Birds of Tokyo’s Ian Berney.

The move comes after Eagles fans indicated they wanted a more “catchy” tune to sing along to.

In the updated version, the lyrics of the song’s 33-year-old chorus haven’t changed, however two fresh verses have been added in.

The most powerful difference is the song’s introduction, which features a didgeridoo and clapsticks – an AFL club song first – to recognise the club’s proud indigenous heritage.

The new song will be played as the team enters the field during the 2020 season and after each victory. Fans will hear it played for the first time at a match venue when the club’s AFLW team debuts against Collingwood at Victoria Park on February 9.

Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett said it was the appropriate time to review the club song.

“The song has been with us for 33 years and there has been a couple of iterations, but it’s just the right time,” he said.

“We’ve moved to a new stadium, we have moved to new premises and we just thought it was important to get the song looked at.

“The player feedback has been very strong to try something different. As much as it’s a bit of the same, it is a different feel and it’s quite creative and we’re really pleased with it.”

As part of the rebrand, Eagles players unveiled a pre-song chant after winning games in 2019. The club says that will continue through 2020 and beyond.

Check out the full lyrics below.

VERSE 1

Born is pride from isolation

Our fortress built, we cross the nation

Our colours share, the west coast sky

Our will to win will never die

CHORUS

We’re the Eagles, the West Coast Eagles

And we’re here to show you why

We’re the big birds, kings of the big game

We’re the Eagles, we’re flying high

VERSE 2

We stick together, through thick and thin

We grow as champions from within

Our club knows it’s more than winning

It’s west coast magic and it’s just beginning

CHORUS

We’re the Eagles, the West Coast Eagles

And we’re here to show you why

We’re the big birds, kings of the big game

We’re the Eagles, we’re flying high

We’re the Eagles, we’re flying high
