Travis Boak joins elite Port Adelaide company by winning second club champion award

In the first year since handing over the captaincy, Port Adelaide veteran Travis Boak has won his second John Cahill Medal. See all the award winners and the round-by-round voting.

He relinquished the captaincy and was supposed to be on the decline.

Instead, Travis Boak this year turned back the clock to produce, statistically, the greatest season of his 13-year career.

At age 31, Boak last night was rewarded for a stunning year by winning his second John Cahill Medal as Port Adelaide club champion.

Joining elite company by becoming just the fourth player to win multiple Cahill medals, behind Warren Tredrea and Kane Cornes (four) and Robbie Gray (three), Boak stepped up to the podium eight years after tying with former teammate Jackson Trengove.

He polled 179 votes to claim his second medal by 11 from vastly-improved small defender Darcy Byrne-Jones (168) and defender-turned-midfielder Dan Houston (167).

First-year sensation Connor Rozee was a meritorious fourth, with 131 votes.

The teenage forward/midfielder won the Power’s goalkicking with 29.

This club champion award was extra special for Boak.

Moving back into the midfield this season after a stint forward and seemingly enjoying life without the burden of captaincy, he proved that he was far from a spent force.

Boak took the lead in the vote count following a 33-disposal, eight-tackle performance in the round two win against Carlton and never surrendered it.

This was despite polling a modest six votes in his last three games of the season.

Boak polled in 20 of Port’s 22 games and was voted the club’s best player six times.

Votes were cast by senior coach Ken Hinkley, senior assistant Michael Voss, each player’s respective line coach — Nathan Bassett (forwards), Jarrad Schofield (midfield) and Brett Montgomery (defence) — and general manager of football Chris Davies on a scale of 0 to 5.

A player could be awarded a maximum of 20 votes.

Boak, who captained the Power for six years before handing over the duties last summer, amassed 30 disposals or more 14 times this season.

His averages of 30.3 disposals and five tackles were career highs.

Victorian Boak, who has played 264 games in 13 seasons for Port since being drafted at pick five in 2006, also polled 16 Brownlow Medal votes this season — five short of his career-high of 21 in 2014.

Capping off a big night at the Adelaide Convention Centre, Boak also won the Fos Williams Medal as best team man (voted by his teammates) while he was also recognised with the John McCarthy Award for community service for his decade of work with the Childhood Cancer Association.

In the other AFL award categories, Rozee claimed the Gavin Wanganeen Award as the best player under 21 and Byrne-Jones took home the Coaches’ Award as most improved.

Former Melbourne midfielder Jack Trengove, who already has been delisted by the Power for next season, won the A.R. McLean Medal as the club’s best and fairest SANFL player.

He polled 154 votes to edge fellow on-baller Willem Drew and ruckman Peter Ladhams by nine.
