PORT Adelaide assistant coach Michael Voss believes captain Travis Boak is set to have a breakout year in his role as a midfielder-forward with the freedom to pick his contests and add polish to the Power’s goal kicking.
Boak, who has spent the bulk of his career as an inside midfielder, has made a gradual transition to the forward line and his class in front of the goals will add another dimension to the Power as he is settling into his new role.
He proved he can be both quick-thinking and kick goals from a long range in the club’s intraclub match on Saturday and Voss said Boak’s new-found freedom opens up a range of opportunities.
“He’ll play a similar role to what he played last year,” Voss said of Boak.
WINES ‘NOT COMFORTABLE’ SIGNING NEW DEAL
“We appreciate that we have a few contested balls around the stoppages now with (Sam) Powell-Pepper and (Ollie) Wines also strong around the clinches and ‘Ebo’ (Brad Ebert) strong as well.
“It just gives us the luxury to play him where he can get from contest to contest and use his weapons, which is his running.
“When he turns up to those spots and finishes his work the way he does he’s a pretty dangerous player.”
Voss could not speak more highly of former Demon captain Jack Trengove and Tom Rockliff, who have been quick to make an impression at Alberton.
Trengove was an outstanding junior at Sturt before being wracked by injuries at Melbourne but appears to have put his woes behind him to be ready to challenge for a senior spot.
“A lot of the guys had a good first outing,” Voss said.
“I though Jack Trengove also was really handy.
“As you expect with ‘Rock’, he’s a very smart player and when he touches it generally something happens.
“I thought Jack ... it’s been pleasing to see him pick what we’re doing up so quickly.”
