Port Adelaide co-captain Ollie Wines disappointed with emotional response against Collingwood

Port Adelaide co-captain Ollie Wines could have been playing on a broken ankle since Round 6 and has revealed the reasons behind his emotional reaction on the bench in Friday night’s loss to Collingwood.

Port Adelaide co-captain Ollie Wines could have been playing with a broken ankle since the North Melbourne game and could be missing for up to six weeks.

The tough midfield bull revealed on Friday he had some ankle issues since taking on Richmond in Round 4 but scans ahead of the Kangaroos match in Round 6 had cleared him of any damage.

“They’d been getting a little bit worse and I’d had some scans going into the North Melbourne match showing nothing wrong with the bone,” Wines said.

“But post the Collingwood match there was a crack in it. So we think it might have happened in the North match where I had a foot issue as well.”

Wines said he was past fit to play against Collingwood and refused to use it as an excuse for a disappointing game.

“I was fit to play and was able to run the game out,” Wines said.

“I was in a bit of discomfort obviously and I’d say that there would generally be 50 per cent of footballers these days going in sore, I was in that exact same boat and we just didn’t realise the extent of it.

“When we found out the result (of scans) there’s no point trying to play on, you just need to rest and let it heal.”

Wines, who missed the first two games of the season as he recovered from a shoulder injury sustained in an off-season waterskiing accident, expects to be missing from the Power side for four to six weeks, including Saturday’s Showdown which would have been his first as co-captain.

“It is disappointing but Boaky is going to lead us out like has for the past six years and do us proud,” Wines told FIVEaa Breakfast.

“It’s only a crack of the bone and it’s not displaced or anything. It’s just got to heal up and that takes time.”

Boak led a light captain’s run at Adelaide Oval on Friday morning as Port Adelaide completed its final training session ahead of Saturday’s Showdown 46.

Boak was the logical choice to be reinstalled as captain with both new co-captains Wines and Jonas (calf) and vice-captain Hamish Hartlett (hamstring) all sidelined.

Wines also spoke about his emotional reaction on the bench during last Friday night’s loss to Collingwood and the quarter-time spray he and Scott Lycett copped from coach Ken Hinkley.

“Every now and then you have a bad game of footy and Friday night was that for me,” Wines said.

“My main role as captain is how I lead in play and I’ve got to sort of set my feeling upon the game and be tough around the contest and win the ball at the clinches and … myself and Scott Lycett weren’t able to do that at the crunch ball, and that’s probably where they killed us in the first quarter.

“Obviously Kenny made that quite clear to me at quarter time.”

Cameras caught Wines hunched over and appearing in distress late in the game.

“It was probably a combination of incidents throughout the game where I was disappointed with what I did,’’ Wines said.

“I think that came on the end of an errant handball that turned over and we had a goal scored against us. I think it was just a combination of moments that got to that point.

“I’ve got to get a little bit better as a leader not to show my emotions I guess in correspondence to the score as much.

“You’ve got to show vulnerability at times but at the same time I think as a leader I’ve got to be strong and bold, not all the time, but probably in moments like that I’ve got stand up a little bit more,

Wines said a new look Port Adelaide after forced chances at the selection table were ready take it to the Crows Saturday night.

“When you’ve got guy as hungry as ever it can only mean good things, particularly after a performance like last week,’’ Wines added.

“It’s our home Showdown and we’ve got everything to play for so it’s going to be a big Saturday night,’’ he added.

Friday’s training consisted mainly of goalkicking and returning Showdown 44 hero Steven Motlop, who has spent three weeks in the SANFL, looked sharp in front of the sticks from a whole range of angles.

Wines’s midfield minutes are largely expected to be filled by Willem Drew, who did a fine job filling in for the co-captain when he was recovering from a shoulder injury earlier in the year.

Sam Mayes and Zak Butters took part in the captain’s run despite not being named in the Showdown side.
