Bit embarrassing: Ollie Wines rues Port Adelaide’s stunning collapse against Collingwood and slide from top-four hope to also-ran

PORT Adelaide vice-captain Ollie Wines has questioned the team’s mindset and its willingness to go the extra mile as Melbourne put another dagger in the Power’s perishing finals hopes on Sunday.

PORT Adelaide vice-captain Ollie Wines says the Power’s players stopped working for each other as the club searches for answers with its finals dream on life support.

Wines, who was Port Adelaide’s leading possession winner with 29 in the Power’s 51-point loss to Collingwood, echoed coach Ken Hinkley’s sentiments that the work rate had not been up to standard and questioned the team’s willingness to go the extra mile.

“For whatever reason we’re not able to work hard enough as a team to get over the line,” Wines told The Advertiser.

“To be honest it’s a bit embarrassing as a team to have seven to one (goals) kicked on you (in the last quarter) when you’ve got finals to play for an everything is on the line.

“I think it looks like that we were outworked.”

Melbourne’s 17-point win over West Coast in Perth on Sunday put another dagger in the Port Adelaide’s season, with the Power now needing to beat Essendon at Adelaide Oval on Friday night and rely on lowly Gold Coast to beat Geelong.

Wines said Port Adelaide lost its confidence in a stunning collapse from top four hopeful to now staring at missing the finals completely.

“It’s not pretty and with finals on the line it’s embarrassing,” Wines said.

“Everyone is on a pretty even keel these days; I don’t think there’s any advantage or disadvantage in terms of fitness.

“It’s got to be something in our mind.”

Wines said there had still been passages when the Power looked the goods, but the confidence at Alberton has taken a hit.

“Most definitely (the confidence is down),” Wines said.

“The sort of game style we turned to, we got the game back on our terms in the third and were able to score quickly.

“Not much changes in the last in terms of them defending us — it’s more so us changing what we do.

“We seem to be able to flow with that free-flowing footy to start with but not be able to do it for four quarters.

“That last quarter we were as stagnant as I’ve seen.”
