How Adelaide Oval food and drink prices compare to other AFL venues for Season 2019

Adelaide Oval’s price list for this AFL season has been revealed — with big differences in how much local fans will pay for beer, burgers, pies and hot dogs compared to interstate venues. SEE HOW THE PRICES COMPARE

Adelaide Oval hotel proposal

Adelaide Oval will have the most-expensive mid-strength beer and hamburgers on the AFL national circuit this football season - and the cheapest hot dogs and cappuccino.

Just a month from the start of the AFL premiership season, the Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority has presented a snapshot on food and drink prices across the national league to the parliamentary committee assessing plans to build a hotel at the Oval.

The Oval this season will charge $9 a pint for mid-strength beer, up 10 cents on last year’s prices. This ranks with prices at the Sydney Cricket Ground as the most-expensive in the AFL.

In Perth, the cost to the fans is $8.70; Brisbane, $8.30; and in Melbourne a pint of full-strength beer will cost $8.20 at the Docklands arena and $8.40 at the MCG.

A pint of full-strength beer will cost $9.50 - up 10 cents on last year’s prices - at the Oval this football season. This compares favourably with the $9.90 price tag in Brisbane and $9.70 in Perth.

Full-strength beer is cheapest for AFL fans in Melbourne - $8.40 at the MCG and $8.20 at the rebranded Marvel Stadium.

The SMA told The Advertiser the authority’s price structure for beer takes into account how much more full-strength beer than mid-strength is sold at the Oval during the AFL season.

SMA spokesman Darren Chandler said the authority is “very conscious” of the fans’ needs in setting food and drink prices at the Oval.

“We are always looking at how we can diversify our revenue base so that we can keep price increases on food and drink to a minimum for the fans,” he said. “We also allow our patrons to bring their own drink and food to the Oval.”

The SMA emphasises in its report to the State parliament committee assessing Adelaide Oval’s redevelopment plans there is a flaw in comparing food and drink prices between the Oval and the MCG.

The SMA paper says: “The (100,000-seat) MCG benefits (from the 50,000-seat Adelaide Oval) from economies of scale given the venue’s large size and higher number of events staged).

Adelaide Oval delivers the best value to the fans on hot dogs - $8.70 compared with $11.20 at the Gabba in Brisbane; $9.70 at the MCG; $9.50 at the SCG and $9 at Perth Stadium.

The Oval also has the cheapest coffee in the AFL - $4.50 compared with $5 at Sydney and Perth; $4.70 at the Melbourne venues and $4.60 in Brisbane.

The SMA in October announced a general 1.5 per cent increase in food and drink prices at the Oval for this AFL season.

A significant note in the Season 2019 prices was the 10-cent increase in the price of a 600ml bottle of water, from $5 to $5.10. This is the second most-expensive price across the AFL circuit behind the $5.50 to be charged at the SCG in Sydney this year.

Water will be cheapest at the MCG with a $3.30 price tag.
