Hawthorn has thrown small forward Darren Minchington a career lifeline for the second time after a cruel twist opened a spot on the club’s list.

The Hawks have placed 19-year-old Will Golds on the long-term injury list after he suffered a knee injury in a VFL practice match for Box Hill on Saturday.

Minchington trained with Hawthorn throughout pre-season after being delisted at the end of last season.

But the former Saint’s career appeared over when he posted on Instagram six days ago: “That’s a wrap on that chapter. Thank you Hawthorn for the opportunity.”

Minchington featured in a pre-season match for the Hawks against his former club two weeks ago, kicking two goals.

The 26-year-old played eight VFL matches for the club’s affiliate Box Hill last season, averaging 60 ranking points and kicking four goals.

“We’re excited to be able to offer Darren a place on our list in light of Will Golds’ unfortunate news,” Hawthorn football boss Graham Wright said.

“He’s a mature-aged forward who has the ability to have an impact at senior level if he is called upon.”

Minchington played 28 games for the Saints and kicked 22 goals.

The Hawks signed journeyman ruckman Keegan Brooksby to a one-year deal five days ago, which was promoted as the “final piece of Hawthorn’s puzzle” by the club.
