GOLD Coast captain Steven May says the fact he is playing through injury every week proves he is invested in the Suns and he believes his side’s upset win over Sydney could help sway Tom Lynch.

Blues 'indefensible coaching'

GOLD Coast captain Steven May says the fact he is playing through injury every week proves he is invested in the Suns.

May has battled a hip injury for past three weeks that should have cost him games but he has put his hand up to play and lead the side.

There have been reports stating May would ask for an early release from his contract to join co-captain Tom Lynch in the Gold Coast departure lounge.

He said yesterday the constant speculation about his future and suggestions he was already checked out had become tiring.

“I’ve seen some things saying I’m not invested, tossing up my future, but my job is to lead from the front on and off the field,’’ he said.

“I’m contracted for next year and I like to think I’m putting my body on the line each week, playing through some injuries and doing my best.

“I’m looking forward to next year with the team and hopefully we can make a few more changes to the list and create a strong side.”

Suns coach Stuart Dew all but conceded Lynch was gone last week but May believes the gutsy win over Sydney at the SCG on Saturday had the potential to change his mind.

He said his close mate was the first to text him after the game.

“He was totally stoked, he wanted to know all the details, what Dewey said,’’ he said.

“He is like a little kid he was so excited, so that was good, especially for someone who is potentially leaving, to see him so happy.

“Hopefully he hasn’t made up his mind yet. It would have been good to win a few more games earlier but hopefully we can win a few more now and change his mind.’’

May had no hesitation declaring the 24 point win, their first ever over the Swans, the highlight of his career.

“It was pretty special, it is easily the best win in our history I feel, particularly in the circumstances and how much of a bad year we have had,’’ he said.

“I am privileged to be the skipper with Tommy recovering in hospital so I’m certainly very proud.

“Thinking about it now, we did carry on like we won the grand final but I really couldn’t believe it and on Sunday morning when I woke up I checked my phone to make sure it really did happen. It felt like a fairytale.’’

May believes the win had the potential to be a turning point for the club in negotiations with out of contract players and also potential recruits from other clubs.

“It is certainly nice concrete evidence to show people about where we are heading as a cub. I can guarantee no one gave us a chance to beat the Swans,’’ he said.

“It means a lot to our players and younger ones coming through and potential free agents we could attract.’’
