SAM Day was the one Sun not looking forward to last week’s bye.

History has taught the Suns forward his body prefers continuity in training and he admits it has been tough to get going after the players were given last week off.

After missing the entire 2017 season because of a dislocated and fractured hip, Day could have been excused for hoping for a breather after playing the first eight games of the season.

However, a suspension in Round 8 against Melbourne saw him miss the trip to China and turned a one week break into two.

He concedes there may have been a point where he hit the wall and the break may have been the best thing for him, but right now with the layer of rust he accumulated from his rest it feels the exact opposite.

“I guess we’ll find out over the next couple of weeks whether it was a good thing or a bad thing,’’ he said.

“Chatting to a few of our sports science guys we’ve decided for me continuity in training and getting the momentum from playing is better.

“And to get going over the past few days has actually been a bit of a struggle because I had that extra time off.’’

“We’ll have to see how I pull up after the game, but I can’t complain about how my body was going or my hip was feeling before the break.’’

Day said he was now playing almost totally pain free except for the occasional movement that may cause a twinge and he was gaining explosive power to fly at the footy and crash into packs.

The Suns have been stunned at how well he has bounced back not just physically but also the form he has recaptured, which saw him playing arguably the most consistent footy of his career over the first two months.

Day still feels he can lift his performances another level or two this season but admits he is more than happy with how he is coping physically.

“That’s been really exciting for me, we didn’t know how I would come back from the injury,’’ he said.

He is now working on the mental aspect of his game. He has a beautiful kicking action and is a great shot a goal but admits sometimes he can get the jitters.

“My dad was pretty hard on me as a kid, no kicking around corners or swinging the boot across the body and I stuck with that growing up,’’ he said.

“The worse thing for me is my mind, I can sometimes over think it.

“You’re thinking don’t miss it, what is everyone going to say if I miss it, which is over-complicating it instead of just going back and concentrating on your kicking action.’’
