Patrick Dangerfield will have at least another five years to chase an elusive premiership with Geelong after signing on until the end of 2024.
The deal will take the Brownlow medallist through to his 17th AFL campaign when he will be 34.
“Patrick leads by example, highly motivated to further develop himself and invest in the growth of his teammates,” Cats football boss Simon Lloyd said.
“His ability to perform at a consistent, elite level is something our young group aspire to.”
In August, Dangerfield told the Herald Sun: “I remember listening to Matty Pavlich, and it’s etched in my memory, he was talking about fulfilment when he finished his career, whether he felt fulfilled, and everyone’s different obviously. But if I put myself in that position, I don’t think I could ever feel really satisfied when all you’ve ever tried to do, is get to there.”
Dangerfield finished second in this year’s Brownlow Medal count with 27 votes, six behind winner Nat Fyfe.
The champion on-baller played 24 games this year, taking his career tally to 248.
Pending fitness, his contract extension will put him in the frame to become the 17th VFL/AFL player to feature in more than 350 games.
Dangerfield is the third Cat to sign a new deal in the past two days after teammates Gary Rohan and Mitch Duncan inked new contracts.

Duncan has resisted the lure of a return to his home state Western Australia and re-signed until the end of 2024, while Rohan will be a Cat for at least the next two seasons.
Key forward Tom Hawkins becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season and the Cats’ next priority will be signing their spearhead beyond 2020.
