GEELONG coach Chris Scott has conceded a fairytale Gary Ablett homecoming will be “impossible”.

Ablett is contracted to Gold Coast for next year but the prospect of the 33-year-old returning to the Cats was made even tougher after he won his fourth Suns best-and-fairest award on Saturday night.

Gold Coast refused Ablett’s trade request last year, but the former captain has yet to inform the Suns of his intentions for 2018.

Should Ablett again ask to be traded back to the Cats, the Suns are likely to demand in return an established player and have them pay their wage.

Ablett also hasn’t ruled out retirement.

But Scott said the hurdles the Cats faced to bring Ablett back home could be too high to overcome.

“If the obstacles I’m hearing are correct and factual then they’re too great,” Scott said on Channel 9.

“I think we’ve been consistent on that, but there’s always room for things to change.

“But if some of the obstacles that have been articulated are true then it’s just impossible.

“It’s not a matter of wanting to do it or not — it’s just impossible.”

After securing Gold Coast’s club champion award, Ablett said he would spend time with family before making a decision on his future but has “got a lot to think about over the next couple of weeks”.

“I’ve been in the game 16 years now and it is a very demanding sport so I need to work out what that next step is,” he said.

“I just want to be clear I love this football club, I’ve been here for seven years and it has been such a big part of my life for a long time.

“I think as you get older, I have some other things going on in my life that I need to start prioritising, so they are some of the things I need to start talking through.”
