Will Jordan De Goey sign with a new manager?

It’s been more than three months since Jordan De Goey sacked his manager Ben Niall and the soon-to-be out-of-contract Collingwood superstar is still without a representative. Will he even get one? Could he go it alone?

Collingwood star Jordan De Goey remains without a manager, more than three months after parting ways with Ben Niall.

While there remains a freeze on new AFL player contracts during the coronavirus lockdown, the situation is unusual for a player of De Goey’s ilk who is out of contract at the end of this season.

Niall — as well as the Magpies — was unhappy with how De Goey turned up for pre-season training in February and made it known, leading to the falling out between manager and player.

Reports last month suggested De Goey could go at it alone this year and negotiate his own contract, whether that is with Collingwood or another club.

While that is not unheard of, it is certainly very rare in the modern era – especially among the upper echelon of players.

Some players have family members manage their contract negotiations rather than outside agents, including David Cloke who managed his three sons Jason, Cameron and Travis.

However, players are rarely at the negotiating table themselves.

De Goey revealed last year that he knocked back a five-year, $5 million offer to join North Melbourne at the end of 2018 but the strength of relationships he had built at Collingwood was a key factor in deciding to ink a two-year contract extension with the Magpies.

De Goey played 17 games for Collingwood last season, averaging almost 17 disposals and kicking 34 goals.
