Jordan De Goey knocks back $1 million offers, tells Collingwood he’s staying in black and white

JORDAN De Goey has turned down million dollar offers from St Kilda and North Melbourne, telling Collingwood he wants to stay. The news is a huge boost for the Magpies, but it won’t come cheap.

JORDAN de Goey has effectively shut down rival offers, telling Collingwood he wants to remain a Magpie.

The hard-nut midfielder is expected to soon sign a two-year extension, turning down huge million dollar offers from St Kilda and North Melbourne.

His manager Ben Niall told the Herald Sun no deal had been done, conceding the Pies were still attempting to meet de Goey’s financial demands.

But de Goey has made an emphatic statement to both Niall and the Pies that he wants to stay at the club.

Niall and Pies list manager Ned Guy will continue to work on final terms of a contract. The financial gap between the parties is no longer considered significant enough to be a deal-breaker.

It is an enormous show of faith in the Pies, and a move that will see him passing up over $3 million in guaranteed wages over the next five years.

De Goey’s deal with the Pies is likely to be around $700,000 a season for a two-year deal, with the Roos offering $5 million over five seasons.

De Goey and his family are keen to balance loyalty with financial considerations.

Niall made clear no official agreement had been brokered.

“We haven’t done a deal yet. Jordy would like to do a deal, but there is a gap.

“We are being transparent with Collingwood and he is keen to stay.”

De Goey is understood to believe staying at Collingwood is the best step for his future development and career path.

He will assume a bigger midfield responsibility in coming years with club chiefs confident they have put the right support around him to flourish off the field.

He has a strong group of friends at the club, has been mentored by Scott Pendlebury, shadowing him in the gym through the summer.

Paul Licuria and Garry Hocking have also spent time with him as he attempts to quickly mature after early-career misfires.

Jamie Elliott and Darcy Moore will next week return through the VFL, with a deal on de Goey allowing the Pies clean air to move onto their deals.

Coach Nathan Buckley said de Goey had to weigh up more than money when he decided upon who could maximise his talent.

“Jordy is a big boy, he is handling it (the media attention) pretty well,” he said.

“There is more than dollars it comes down to. Clearly, we are talking about professional athletes in a professional environment — what you can do to set your life up, build a nest egg for the future. You are not in this for a long time, that is a careful consideration for every professional footballer.

“But there are other things in the mix. He has some great connections and friendships in the playing group … I am really confident in that.

“It is just a matter of how it fits and what Jordy wants to do, but I think he sees the value in other things as well.”

“So we would be keen for Jordan to continue with us — and (to look at) what we can do for his development and what he can do for us.
