Collingwood has left the door ajar to resume the AFL season with a Queen’s Birthday blockbuster against Melbourne on June 8.
An AFL resumption in mid-June is more likely, however Magpies president Eddie McGuire held talks with FightMND board member Bill Guest and Channel 7 boss Lewis Martin on Wednesday.
The annual Collingwood-Melbourne fixture coincides with the ‘Big Freeze’ fundraiser, which last year raised more than $1 million for research into motor neurone disease.
“They have got a plan in place to do something spectacular. If we could play on the Queen’s Birthday that would be right,” McGuire said.

“But at the moment with things being pushed back, it doesn’t look like we’ll get the pre-season in to do so.”
McGuire said Collingwood would have “ideally” liked to have relaunched its campaign on Queen’s Birthday but conceded “it may not land that way”.
Regardless, the Magpies plan to honour Daniher and raise money for his charity.
“That might be the first game, Collingwood and Melbourne and if it is, obviously we’ll do something big for the Neale Daniher (charity),” he said on Footy Classified.
AFL clubs have nominated June 18 and 25 as dates to restart the season, which has been shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
