Carlton expects Charlie Curnow to be training before Christmas after the forward sent a scare through the Blues camp when he suffered a knee injury playing basketball.

Curnow dislocated his right knee cap playing basketball with friends and was absent from the Blues’ best and fairest count on Friday night.

The star forward is set to undergo surgery to stablise his knee and is staring at two months on the sidelines.

“We are confident surgery will be the right course of action to allow him to recover fully,” Blues football manager Brad Lloyd said.

“We expect he will be back running prior to Christmas as he prepares for the start of the 2020 season.

“While Charlie is really disappointed, he is determined to attack his rehab and do everything he possibly can to get back to his best and help his teammates achieve success next year.”

The injury is to the same knee Curnow had trouble with during last season.

The 22-year-old matchwinner missed three games in March with bone bruising before going down again in Round 15 and missing the last seven games of the season with a medial ligament injury.

Curnow managed only 11 games in 2019, but his return to full fitness in a side that finished the season strongly under new coach David Teague had been the cause for much optimism at Carlton.
