In particular, the Lions’ radars were off as they bowed out of the finals in straight sets – slotting 8.17 in the qualifying final loss to Richmond – and 11.14 in the three-point semi-final defeat to Greater Western Sydney.
The 67-year-old Matthews slotted 915 majors and 724 behinds across his legendary playing career which netted four premierships and eight best and fairest awards.
He was the Hawks’ leading goal kicker six times, before going on to coach Collingwood (1990) and the Lions (2001-03) to four premierships combined.
While the Lions are yet to lock-in any formal arrangements, the club wants to sharpen its focus on goal kicking ahead of the Lions’ premiership assault next season.
Sydney Swans (Tony Lockett), Essendon (Matthew Lloyd), Carlton (Saverio Rocca) and St Kilda (Ben Dixon) have all engaged former players to help with their goal kicking in recent years, while Melbourne has recently handed Greg Stafford the goal kicking coach responsibilities in the wake of a poor 2019 season.
Matthews remains on the Lions’ board and in a special comments role with Channel 7.
