The veteran Adelaide forward has scored his fourth nomination for this year’s Goal of the Year prize — and second in a fortnight — for his outrageous final term snap against Richmond on Thursday.
The goal, where he roves the ball from the back of the pack and snaps truly after sprinting clear from Tigers defender Nathan Broad in the north-eastern corner of Adelaide Oval that has become universally known as the ‘Eddie Betts Pocket’, has attracted just as much attention for the awe-struck reaction from rookie Richmond opponent Sydney Stack as the kick itself.
Betts is up against efforts from Brandon Matera (Fremantle) and Adam Saad (Essendon) to win this week’s prize.
The Round 13 nomination comes hot on the heels of his win in Round 12 for his scintillating last-term sealer against Greater Western Sydney where he shot past Heath Shaw and Sam Reid, trapped the ball in from the boundary and tapped it to his advantage between his legs, and then curled it from his right boot from an impossible angle in the north-west pocket.
That goal was in a similar position to his miracle goal in his 300th game against Gold Coast in Round 5, where he roved the ball off opponent Jarrod Harbrow’s spoil attempt and slotted the middle with a banana kick on his left.
Then there was his Round 7 winner against Fremantle where he roved a pack in the south-western pocket, span 180 degrees and snapped on his right boot across his body.
Betts is a three-time winner of the award, going back to back for Adelaide in 2015 and 2016 and a gong while at Carlton in 2006.
The main question now is which Betts goal is his best chance of winning overall honours this year?

The winner of the annual award will this year pocket a $10,000 cash prize.
The AFL’s All-Australian Selection Committee will at the end of the home-and-away season select the best three goals from a selection of 28 — the 23 weekly winners, along with five other contenders as determined by the AFL Media footy expert selectors.
The overall winner is then determined by a combination of votes from the AFL’s All-Australian Selection Committee (counted as 10 votes) and public voting (counted as one vote).
