Indigenous All Stars congratulate Eddie Betts

Some of the AFL’s best indigenous players have spoken about watching Eddie Betts on TV as kids then growing up to play alongside him on the big stage as he prepares for his 300th game this weekend.

Neville Jetta, Wayne Milera, Mathew Stokes, Shaun Burgoyne and Charlie Cameron recorded a message of congratulations to the Crows superstar while they were in Adelaide for the AFL’s Indigenous All Stars camp in February.

“Congratulations bro on reaching 300 games, unbelievable milestone for you and the family,” Melbourne defender Neville Jetta said.

“Obviously growing up I was able to watch you play and then have been able to have a few battles with you the last few years.

“You’re an unbelievable person both on and off the field and I have the utmost respect for you as a player, a father, a husband and everything you stand for.”

Milera echoed Jetta’s comments and says he’s privileged to call him a teammate at Adelaide.

“It’s been great being out on the field with you, I remember watching you as a little fella so congrats and good luck,” Milera said.

Cameron, who lived with Betts when he was drafted by the Crows added:

“I want to wish you all the best in your 300th game, I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done for me so all the best.”

And Burgoyne, who like Betts hails from Port Lincoln, said he was proud of the mercurial forward who has become one of the game’s greats.

“You’ve got a lot of highlights, a lot of goals and snaps but if I had to pick one it was probably your goal when you played for Carlton, on the boundary line, you had a smother then a checkside through the goals,” Burgoyne said.

“It's an unbelievable effort from where you’ve come from to being one of the best all time small forwards in the game.”

Retired Geelong premiership player Mathew Stokes described Betts as a “legend of a player”.

“But most importantly legend bloke, legend father and legend man, and a great mentor for all of our young players coming through so good work and good luck brother,” Stokes said.

Betts is set to play game number 300 against Gold Coast on Easter Sunday.
