Sam Jacobs’ milestone match would add even more motivation to Crows hunting a finals berth, Hugh Greenwood tells The Lowdown Podcast

With a finals spot on the line, as if the Crows needed any added motivation to beat Collingwood this weekend. But then there’s the prospect of Sam Jacobs’ 200th game. Hugh Greenwood discusses what ‘Sauce’ means to the team on The Lowdown Podcast.

Sloane eyes Pies return

WITH a finals spot on the line Adelaide shouldn’t need any added motivation to beat Collingwood this weekend but the prospect of Sam Jacobs’ 200th game could raise their spirits even higher, midfielder Hugh Greenwood said.

Speaking on The Lowdown Podcast, Greenwood described Jacobs as one of the most loved figures at the club and hopes he gets to play his milestone match against the Magpies at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

Jacobs returned from a 17-week wait to play game number 199 against West Coast last weekend after emerging big-man Reilly O’Brien was dropped.

“Saucy is one of those guys — the locker room loves him, the fans love him, he’s just brings a smile to your face,” Greenwood said.

“So whenever he is up and about it brings the group up. He knows and we know that he has that affect on the group and he’s not shy about talking about his 200th, I know he’s excited if and when he gets his opportunity it will be an awesome achievement.

“There shouldn’t be too much more incentive (this weekend), we’re playing for a finals spot and it’s potentially our last game of the year at Adelaide Oval, so the cherry on top would be Sauce in his 200th to get the boys up and about.”

Coach Don Pyke considered playing both Jacobs and O’Brien against West Coast last week and Greenwood said that could be an option to counter Collingwood’s Brodie Grundy.

“It is an option but it comes back to our forward pressure if we can afford to have those two guys — one as a resting forward — knowing our forward pressure hasn’t quite been at the mark,” said Greenwood, who hasn’t played at AFL level since Round 18.

“Don flirted with the idea (of two ruckmen), he kept the media guessing by taking Rob over to Perth and I’m not sure if he was genuinely considering playing both but we’ll find out during the week.

“I thought he (Jacobs) was excellent (against the Eagles). Obviously we’ve been smacked in the clearances the last couple of weeks and against a quality midfield like West Coast we held our own and he was giving us first use.

“Obviously Rob provides us with something a bit different in terms of his follow up and his ability to get it around the ground but Sauce’s tap work was exceptional on the weekend and that’s the strength that he brings.”
