Jason Dunstall says Matthew Nicks faces a tough choice over which two key forwards will make the cut for Crows

Reilly O’Brien, Taylor Walker, Elliott Himmelberg, Billy Frampton and Darcy Fogarty. Not all big men can fit into the Crows’ Round One side according to Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall – but which of them will Matthew Nicks choose?

How many talls can Adelaide fit into its best 22?

It’s a tough question that coach Matthew Nicks will need to find an answer to over the next few weeks, according to Hawthorn legend and Fox Footy commentator Jason Dunstall.

The Crows took number one ruckman Reilly O’Brien, forward/ruckmen Elliott Himmelberg and ex-Port Adelaide recruit Billy Frampton into Saturday’s Marsh Community Series against Melbourne at Casey Fields.

Former captain Taylor Walker, who was absent at a wedding, and young star Darcy Fogarty were two other big men missing from the clash.

Should all five be available for Round One of the premiership season, Dunstall – who led the external review into Adelaide’s operations at the end of 2019 – said Nicks will have some hard decisions to make.

And he doesn’t think all five can coexist in the same team.

“It’s two of Walker, Fogarty, Frampton, Himmelberg (who can fit into the line-up),” said four-time premiership Hawk Dunstall while commentating Saturday’s match.

“Put things in perspective though, they were the 18th ranked team for pressure last season.

“That starts in your forward half when the ball gets there, and then all of a sudden that pressure is then relayed all the way down the ground.

“If it (the ball) is not being really harassed as it comes out of your forward 50, you’re in trouble.

“I don’t think they can afford to play all those talls, but again Matthew Nicks has his own ideas and he’ll work out what’s best for them.”

The Crows play their second pre-season game against Gold Coast on Friday March 6, before kicking off their 2020 premiership campaign against Sydney on Saturday, March 21.
