Former Melbourne star Adem Yze is the latest candidate out of the running for the vacant coaching role at the Crows.
After flying into to Adelaide for an interview on Friday, Yze, who has worked under Alastair Clarkson since 2012, has re-committed to the Hawks until at least the end of 2022.
“Adem is a highly respected assistant coach and has performed well in any portfolio he’s been assigned,” Hawthorn football boss Graham Wright told the club’s website.
“He’ll return to coach the forwards next year but will maintain a focus on team strategy that he performed so well in in 2019.”
The 42-year-old, started his career as a part-time assistant — after playing 271 games for the Demons — will be the forwards coach, as well the Hawks’ head of match may strategy and opposition, in 2020.
Tim Watson reported on SEN on Friday that fellow Hawthorn assistant and early bookies favourite Scott Burns had withdrawn from the mix to be Adelaide’s new coach. Reports on Sunday night suggested this wasn’t so and he was expected to meet with the Crows again this week.
“I think he’s been interviewed maybe two or three or four times, but I’m hearing that he’s actually withdrawn now from the Adelaide coaching race,” Watson said on SEN Breakfast.
“I keep hearing the name Matthew Nicks now.”
Mark Ricciuto revealed last week selection panel members had met with Ross Lyon in Melbourne but the axed Fremantle coach wasn’t putting his hand up for the role.
Current GWS and former Port Adelaide assistant Nicks remains favoured for the job along with former Power player and current Richmond assistant Adam Kingsley.
Face-to-face interviews have begun and the Crows will appoint Pyke’s successor within the next fortnight.
“Within the next 14 days we will be making a series of major decisions, as both the review finalises and we appoint and announce the next senior coach of our club,’’ Crows Chairman Rob Chapman said at the Club Champion Awards on Thursday night.
“I am extremely confident we will emerge with a clear blueprint that will underpin what we expect to be a very exciting period ahead of our football club,” he said.
