Adelaide star Eddie Betts has warned Adam Goodes’ story will happen again

It was one of football’s saddest stories to see dual Brownlow winner Adam Goodes be booed out of the game and Crows star Eddie Betts has warned it will happen again.

Star Adelaide forward Eddie Betts has warned there will be more racist episodes in football but hopes the Adam Goodes exit from the game — which has been chronicled in a movie — will help the public deal better with it the next time.

The Goodes documentary, The Final Quarter, will be first showed at the Sydney Film Festival this month and has already been shown to selected audiences — among then parts of the indigenous playing in the AFL — and moved Betts.

Betts, who has himself been racially vilified, was moved by the movie but was hopeful it could be a lesson for the next time an indigenous footballer was targeted.

“I’ve seen it (the documentary) twice,” Betts said on Adelaide’s FIVEaa on Wednesday morning.

“I saw it at the indigenous camp that we had this year, and then last week we had the whole team and the admin staff.

“It’s hard to watch, personally for myself just to see Adam go through what he went through.

“I urge everyone to watch it because I felt guilty as well … not showing my support around Adam.

“I actually got emotional the first time I watched it and I got up and spoke to the boys.

“It’s going to happen again.

“We don’t know when, we don’t know how but the support we have to show each other as brothers, as indigenous people in the AFL we have to support each other because we can’t let somebody go through what he’s been through again by himself again.

“I’ve been racially abused and it takes a toll on you

“For somebody like Adam, who’s the strongest indigenous person that I know, for that to take a toll on him … for this to happen week in week out, you can just see on his face how much of a toll it was taking on him. “
