Dual Adelaide Crows premiership coach Malcolm Blight headlined four new life members at the club’s season launch on Friday night.

The 69-year-old was an inaugural member of the club’s Hall of Fame and the club’s best and fairest award is named after him.

Blight received life membership alongside current key defender Daniel Talia, Crows Supporter Group member Yvonne Livingston and the late Robert ‘Bob’ Foord, who was on the club’s investment committee and board.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast on Monday morning, Blight was pleasantly surprised with receiving the life membership.

“It was good, it was a massive room with a lot of people,” he said.

“I thought it was a nice, classy entrance to the year.

“It was a nice surprise, I said on the night that I coached for 74 games, the first 52 were outstanding but the next 22 were terrible – but that’s sport.”

Blight only coached three season as the Crows from 1997 to 1999, and said he’s already impressed with new mentor Matthew Nicks.

“I’ve heard him a few times now and he’s very impressive,” he said.

“I’m not bullish, I’m okay with the Crows – I think they have seven or eight A-graders and if those kids sprout like the Power, they’ll be okay.”

It was a busy weekend for the Crows, as they took on Port Adelaide in the Bushfire Twenty20 Showdown match yesterday and Blight believes it has a place on the calendar each year.

“It whets the appetite,” he said.

“It would’ve been better for the Strikers to have won (on Saturday night), I think it’s a great idea.”
