Former Brisbane Lion Ben Keays looked a standout as the Crows sweltered through 40-degree heat at West Lakes on Thursday morning.

Recruited in this year’s rookie draft, the 22-year-old, who played 30 games for the Lions from 2016-19, moved well in the midfield during match simulation and used the ball with precision when kicking inside 50.

He could be a surprise packet for Adelaide next season and push for a round one start.

With young guns Chayce Jones and Ned McHenry kept out of the main training session due to general soreness, most of the Crows squad pushed themselves to the limit through the heat in a two-and-a-half hour session that started at 8am before the scorching sun really set in.

Jordan Gallucci, Andrew McPherson and Tom Doedee were others kept out of main training, along with train-on player James Matthews, who is hoping to be selected prior to the start of the season.

Only Doedee - returning from a knee reconstruction - is injured and he is hoping to play in round one.

Thursday’s session was Adelaide’s last for the year as the players take a three-week break for Christmas.

They will return to training on Friday, January 10, plotting a return to the finals under new coach Matthew Nicks after consecutive misses following the 2017 grand final loss to Richmond.
