ADELAIDE’S casualty list has taken a strategic hit ahead of Saturday’s clash with Carlton at the MCG with Tom Lynch downed by a mystery virus.
Lynch will be miss the Blues clash while doctors are yet to determine the exact nature of the illness affecting Adelaide’s key link man since Monday.
“Unfortunately Tommy Lynch has picked up a viral infection and will be out. We are running some tests the moment but he won’t play,” said Adelaide coach Don Pyke of Lynch who has been isolated from the group.
“It is something viral, we don’t know what that is. We will see how the results come up”
McGovern was rusty against Central District last Saturday and looking at a third game in the SANFL on return from a two month hamstring strain. However the off contract West Australian could be rushed back to cover Lynch.
“Mitch had a good first game back but was quieter on the weekend. His GPS numbers suggest his running is fine but it is his game side as well. We will weigh that up,” said Pyke.
Charlie Cameron (wrist), Wayne Milera (knee) and Luke Brown (ankle) face tests to front the Blues while Scott Thompson, Riley Knight, McGovern, Paul Seedsman, defender Kyle Cheney and David MacKay head the queue for recalls.
“Charlie is in some doubt and unable to train this morning with that wrist injury and we will assess how it looks with Charlie. If he is not right he won’t play,” said Pyke.
“He has strain in it, it’s a matter how functional he will be and how comfortable he is with it.”
Thompson’s stand out showing against Centrals where the 307-game veteran chewed up Elizabeth Oval with two goals and 21 contested possessions caught Pyke’s eye as back up for battling Rory Sloane.
“He is a chance and has had some great form in the SANFL on the weekend. It wasn’t only the volume of possessions but how he won it. He has certainly put his hand up nice and high,” said Pyke of Thompson, 34.
