THE PHANTOM’S FORM GUIDE
(Ranked in order of SuperCoach significance in 2020)
Sam Docherty (DEF $436,100)
Resuming from consecutive season-ending ACL injuries but his credentials – 115-point average in 2017 – are unquestioned. Might need the outing but you can’t leave him out at the price.
Patrick Cripps (MID $635,900)
Among the major SuperCoach players, boasting averages of 117 and 119 in the past two years, and will be prominent again. A safe bet.
Jack Martin (FWD, MID $420,800)
Is yet to average to average more than 81 points in any season but looks capable of better in a permanent role as part of an improving Carlton side. Consider.
Nic Newman (DEF $524,800)
Coming off a super-impressive 2019 campaign, which saw the ball-winner increase his average from 83 to 97, following three scores of 134 or more. Must be respected.
Ed Curnow (MID $493,200)
The 30-year-old resumed midfield role under David Teague, averaging 108 points from Round 12 onwards. Flying under the SuperCoach radar and might surprise.
Will Setterfield (MID $329,700)
There’s no fitness concerns for the 21-year-old this summer and he’s enjoying a terrific preparation. The 192cm is far better than last year’s average of 61 suggests and is likely to be a big improver.
Charlie Curnow (FWD $372,200)
Scores of 89, 93, 102 and 154 in the month leading up to a season-ending injury in Round 15, shows the young forward can figure prominently on his day. Limited preparation but there’s plenty of value here.
Sam Petrevski-Seton (DEF, MID $443,300)
The skilful 21-year-old added 15 points to his SuperCoach average last year and is capable of far better than last start – 28 points against the Cats – suggests. Do not dismiss the dual-position defender-midfielder in his fourth season.
Sam Walsh (MID $471,900)
The young gun is coming off super-impressive first-up effort, which featured 14 scores of 80 or more, and is likely to be prominent again. A definite threat but more of SuperCoach Draft chance in 2020.
Marc Murphy (MID $492,400)
Former skipper must, again, be respected after averaging 105 points per game under Teague, even if others have stronger claims.
Paddy Dow (FWD, MID $295,500)
With averages of 59 and 54, it’s been a slow start for the No. 3 pick from the 2017 draft. But he’s played 39 of a possible 44 games since his debut and might surprise with even greater opportunity. Monitor.
Matthew Kreuzer (RUCK $528,900)
Overcame more injury concerns early last year to post seven SuperCoach tons from his 15 games. Can figure but he’s hard to trust.
Kade Simpson (DEF $442,600)
The 325-game stayer can still feature prominently, as three SuperCoach tons in the final five games of 2019 suggests, but he might take more of a backseat role with the return of Docherty. Consider in SuperCoach Draft.
Zac Fisher (FWD, MID $356,100)
Failed to build on 2018 campaign, failing to score 60 points in 10 of the final 14 matches of last year. Is capable of better but it’s hard to make a case at the price.
Mitch McGovern (FWD $263,400)
Former Crow is a likely improver with a better preparation but it still unlikely to feature in SuperCoach in 2020.
Jack Silvagni (FWD $325,200)
An impressive month saw the young forward post two SuperCoach tons between Rounds 15 and 19 last year but others have stronger claims.
Harry McKay (FWD $334,800)
Scores of 153, 101, 98, 87, 87 shows the promising forward can figure on his day but, while he’s likely to improve again, look elsewhere in SuperCoach.
Caleb Marchbank (DEF $348,000)
Limited preparation but should still be right to take his spot in Round 1. Not in SuperCoach sides, though.
Eddie Betts (FWD $337,500)
Star small-forward takes some catching on his day but it unlikely to feature in Supercoach again.
Jacob Weitering (DEF $383,700)
Coming off a career-best year but others have much stronger claims.
Liam Jones (DEF $358,800)
Can figure, as three SuperCoach tons last year suggests, but won’t figure prominently.
Lachie Plowman (DEF $392,800)
Part of a promising Carlton defence but, again it’s hard to make a case in SuperCoach.
MAKING THEIR CASE
Recruit Jack Newnes (MID $386,400) might force his way past a younger teammate over summer, while Liam Stocker (DEF $242,400) should see more opportunity in his second year.
Neat-kicking Lochie O’Brien (MID $243,400) will be right in the Round 1 mix, as will Michael Gibbons (FWD $321,700) and Levi Casboult (DEF, FWD $403,500), both who would be unlucky to miss out.
Keep an eye out for the injury-plagued Tom Williamson (DEF $146,300) and draftee Brodie Kemp (MID $135,300) later in the year.
