SuperCoach AFL Unique of the Week for Round 14

Players who were expected to have big seasons returned to form in the final of the bye rounds, a seriously undervalued midfielder showed that he’ll offer great value in the coming weeks as a point-of-difference trade-in option, and a dual position RUC / FWD outscored everyone else in the competition.

ROUND 14 UNIQUE OF THE WEEK

Players who were expected to have big seasons returned to form in the final of the bye rounds, a seriously undervalued midfielder showed that he’ll offer great value in the coming weeks as a point-of-difference trade-in option, and a dual position RUC / FWD outscored everyone else in the competition.

DEF: CALLUM MILLS | SYDNEY SWANS | $430,600 | 132 points | 3.3% ownership

Callum Mills started the season as a highly fancied selection who would be a DEF who would move through the midfield to earn far more points per game than he has thus far this season. Instead, his points per game average of just 81.6 is far fewer than was expected of a player of his undoubted class. His performance against the Hawks was easily his best of the year, some 24 SuperCoach points better than his next best game, way back in Round 3 against the Blues. Only his third century-scoring game for the year, Mills three-round average of 97.0 ppg is far closer to what was expected for his output this season, and with his current price basically the same as his season-starting price, it could be a good time to bring him in as a point-of-difference, with a breakeven of just 29 in Round 15.

Thumbs up for those owners of Elliot Yeo from the Eagles in SuperCoach

MID: ELLIOT YEO | WEST COAST EAGLES | $584,000 | 142 points | 3.7% ownership

In previous seasons, Yeo has been a SuperCoach favourite as he has had Dual Position Player status, able to be selected as either a DEF or a MID. With his role in 2018 primarily as a midfield mover, the boffins at Champion Data dictated that he was a pure MID in 2019, and as such his ownership has dropped significantly. But should it have? When it comes to being a reliable scorer, he’s exactly that - he has one game below 83 for the year, and has scored greater than 114 points in over half of his games this year. Averaging 107.3 across the course of the year so far, his current form is even better, with averages of 115.7 in the last three rounds and 119.6 in the last five. With a breakeven of 114 against the Hawks, a team that he traditionally does not score well against - he only averages 65.9 against them in seven appearances - he might be a player to look to bring into your side in coming weeks rather than in Round 15.

RUC: SCOTT LYCETT | PORT ADELAIDE POWER | $495,900 | 180 points | 7.5% ownership

While his ownership is a bit higher than the normally low, low ownership we like to highlight in the Unique of the Week column, it’s hard not to want to commend an outstanding performance by Scott Lycett, who top scored for all players in Round 14. With fellow big men Paddy Ryder and Justin Westhoff dropped for the match-up against the Cats, Lycett had a night out, absolutely monstering Rhys Stanley and Darcy Fort. It’s only the fifth game for the year that he’s surpassed the 100-point mark, but with a game coming up against the Dogs this week - who Brodie Grundy destroyed in the last game of Round 15 - it’ll be interesting to see whether Ken Hinkley and his match committee at Port Adelaide elect to add another tall to their mix, or continue to let Lycett ruck solo. With a breakeven of just 3 against a projected score of 113, his price will rise - with DPP status as a RUC / FWD, he’d be a fine addition to any side in either role.

Melbourne's Tom McDonald was back to the sort of key position forward form expected of him in 2019
Melbourne's Tom McDonald was back to the sort of key position forward form expected of him in 2019

FWD: TOM McDONALD | MELBOURNE DEMONS | $345,700 | 135 points | 1.0% ownership

Turning back the clock to some of the form that helped Melbourne make the finals for the first time in 12 long years last season, Tom McDonald was back to his best for the second half in particular against the Dockers. He started the game looking like he was running in quicksand, but at least - unlike for the majority of the rest of the year - he was actually running and jumping at the contest. Clearly the double ankle surgery if the off-season and knee arthroscopy immediately prior to the start of the year have cruelled his athletic attributes, which is a vital component of his game. After copping a spray over the fence and replying in kind, McDonald looked like a man inspired - all of a sudden he was sprinting and leaping at contests, crashing packs, and impacting the play. Anyone who predicted this return to form is a Nostrodamus; he scored 44 more SuperCoach points than his previous best performance in 2019.
