SuperCoach AFL 2025: Experts rate most popular trades for round 7

Spend big or look for value? And which cash cows are ready to cash in? SuperCoach experts rate the most traded players this week.

SuperCoach AFL: Matt Flynn a must-have? The rookie crisis, and Nick Daicos! | The Phantom's Lair

Some weeks the SuperCoach trades are obvious. This is not one of those weeks.

With uber premiums at the top of the wish list, a range of underpriced guns who could go close to matching them and one big risky cash cow, there are plenty of options.

Here are our experts’ verdict on the 10 most traded out, and 10 most traded in, players for round 7.

MOST TRADED OUT

Luke Trainor ($264,200 DEF)

Al Paton: TRADE. I expect him to be back into the 22 this week and to score well, but unfortunately his cash generation has come to a screeching halt and will take a few weeks to restart. Use that $151k profit now.

Tim Michell: HOLD. Got no issues if you want to trade him but I am pretty confident he’ll reset his cash generation. He’s beaten his Break Even of 74 in his last three full games and should be back in the 22 due to Noah Balta’s curfew.

Patch: TRADE. I can see a case for holding long-term and copping a few price dips but, uh, nah dawg. Not for me. Thank you Luke, until next time.

Simeon Thomas-Wilson: HOLD. Yeah, the 2 is rough but his Break Even is still within reach to reset his cash generation and Noah Balta’s curfew should mean he is back in the side this week.

Matt Forrest: TRADE. Hard one to stomach, but the sub vest has ruined his cash generation. Definitely could smash out a big score and reset it, but is it worth waiting four weeks for him to make an extra $30k?

Chloe Williams: HOLD OR SELL. I’m going with both. He’s the easiest path to Carroll, allowing you to also pocket cash, which is what I’m doing … but I have faith he will continue to score well and eventually rejuvenate his cash gen.

Tarquin Oakley: CONSIDER. Had three consecutive scores above 80 before being named sub against Gold Coast. His cash gen will take a few weeks to reset, but if he’s in the 22 he’s one of the more reliable rookie scorers.

Dan Batten: HOLD. When not the sub, Trainor is much more reliable on-field option than the midfield and forward rookies and his price should rise once his score of 2 is out of his rolling average

Bailey Humphrey ($338,600 FWD)

AP: TRADE. Owners would have been hoping for a lot more than a $68k price gain before selling him off, but it’s better than nothing.

TM: TRADE. What a bust. Averaging 62 in the past three weeks and just dropped a 48 against Richmond. He’s playing as a small forward, not the midfielder we were promised, and that role is as gross as it gets in SuperCoach.

Patch: TRADE. Not sure anyone thought that’d be as painful as it was but here we are.

STW: TRADE. Playing as a small forward. Take the loss on this one.

MF: TRADE. Sucked plenty in with his midfield role to start the season, but Sam Flanders was missing and they beat up some bad teams. That role isn’t there anymore.

TO: TRADE. Happy to have dodged this bullet. Looked like a smart hold before the Suns played the Tigers and then Humphrey dished up a 48 in defeat. Get him gone.

DB: SELL. I saw the midfield time and got sucked in, but we haven’t seen it over the past few weeks. Time to go.

Connor O’Sullivan ($306,200 DEF)

AP: TRADE. Well played if you picked him, now it’s time to take him off to market.

TM: TRADE. Got carved up by Mabior Chol and Jack Gunston on Easter Monday and has been asked to lock down more in recent games than play with any freedom as an interceptor. Made more than $150k. Perfect time to cash in.

Patch: TRADE. Break Even is getting high and I’m not sure he’s going to keep going much longer. But I’ve been wrong on COS before.

STW: TRADE. Made his money, cash in.

MF: TRADE. Geelong has too many intercepting types for him to play his natural game, and he’s still learning the tools of being a lockdown defender. Wouldn’t be surprised if he was in the VFL soon.

CW: TRADE. He’s done his job, a great price to move on now and it’s the perfect time with his BE up to 85.

TO: TRADE. Break Even now up to 85 so you can take your $160k in earnings and put it to good use.

DB: SELL. Is playing more of a lock-down role without Jack Henry in the side and will likely drop in price this week.

Sam Darcy ($497,000 FWD)

AP: TRADE. Was shaping as one of the picks of the season until his knee buckled.

TM: TRADE. Can’t hold him when he’s going to miss 3-4 months. Thank goodness it’s not an ACL, though. Straight swap to Christian Petracca could be on, or even Izak Rankine if you didn’t start him.

Patch: TRADE. Poor bugger. No-one wants to see that.

STW: TRADE. Can’t hold him. Good thing is his price is not far away from a juicy forward option.

MF: TRADE. This is not a question. So sad for Sam, was having an excellent season.

DB: SELL. Very unlucky if you brought him in.

Christian Moraes hasn’t scored over 43 in his past three games. Picture: Darrian Traynor/AFL Photos/via Getty Images

Christian Moraes ($199,900 MID)

AP: TRADE. Can’t be far away from the sub vest or a stint in the SANFL.

TM: TRADE. I haven’t got much right this year but fading the Port rookie looks to have been a winning move. Made about $80k but that looks to be as much as you’ll get from him. Bank $100k and turn him into Matt Carroll via DPP.

Patch: CONSIDER. At this point I’d rather move the dead rookies on and pray for another spike score against North Melbourne, but your mileage may vary.

STW: TRADE. Break Even is rising and he isn’t scoring that well.

MF: TRADE. Boy, there’s a lot of trade options here. He’s not priority No.1, but he’s not going to make a heap of cash from here. If you’ve got a spare trade it might be worth moving him on.

CW: HOLD. He hasn’t made enough money for me to sell, yet … lift, Christian!

DB: SELL. But I wouldn’t trade him over a non-playing rookie unless it is your only way to get to a premium.

Zach Reid ($264,700 DEF)

AP: HOLD. I’m keeping him over Trainor due to the lower Break Even, but starting him on field makes me nervous,

TM: HOLD. Break even is only 14 so he’s got at least one more week of cash generation. Didn’t get the same freedom to play as the switch kick man against West Coast but if he’s back in that role against Collingwood he should score a minimum of 70. It doesn’t get much cushier than sitting 30m off the ball and using your elite foot skills.

Patch: HOLD. At least one more week.

STW: HOLD. Break Even is still low and he should score a lot better this week than he was against the Eagles.

MF: HOLD. You can’t trade everyone. Reid’s Break Even is still very manageable, but it’s getting close for the Bombers defender. One to watch over the next fortnight.

CW: HOLD. He has the lower Break Even then Trainor … I’m slightly tempted to move him on, instead of Trainor, but I think he *just* stays.

TO: HOLD. Still a low Break Even given his 100 the week prior. Has a nice run of Marvel games around the corner, where he scored 88 in round 3.

DB: HOLD. His BE is still just 14 so we can afford to wait at least another week.

Trading Clayton Oliver would be a very risky move. Picture: Morgan Hancock/Getty Images
Trading Clayton Oliver would be a very risky move. Picture: Morgan Hancock/Getty Images

Clayton Oliver ($468,500 MID)

AP: HOLD. Trading him did enter my mind this week after one ton in six games, but this could be the worst possible time to sell him considering the Demons’ fixture.

TM: HOLD. Not a top-eight midfielder but Melbourne has West Coast and Richmond in its next two. If he’s ever going to return to vintage Oliver, it’s now. Realistically he’s going to be a player we need to upgrade over the mid-year byes.

Patch: HOLD. He’s about to play Richmond and West Coast. You’d be a fool to trade him now.

STW: HOLD. Unless you have no other issues you keep Clarry.

MF: HOLD. You didn’t pick him as a keeper lock, but while he’s been a bit disappointing he’s getting a lot of the ball and Melbourne looked much better last week. Surely you’ve got bigger problems than a consistent 90-110.

TO: HOLD. Tigers and Eagles in the next couple of weeks for Clarry, who isn’t yet a concern.

DB: HOLD. Has scored just one ton, but he is averaging the same as Lachie Neale. You’d be kicking yourself if Clarry pumps out back-to-back 120s against Richmond and West Coast.

Finn O’Sullivan ($225,700 MID/DEF)

AP: TRADE. At least you can get something for him, mostly thanks to his high $199k starting price.

TM: TRADE. Moved some pieces around to keep him with the expectation of a spike game against Carlton. He scored 28. That spike match is coming, but who if it will be round 7 or round 15 when he finally starts making money. Right now he’s making cash as quickly as an ice cream salesman in the Antarctic.

Patch: CONSIDER. In the same boat as Moraes, I think he might come good at some point but I’d have no problem flicking him. In fact, I might do so this week.

STW: TRADE. Just doesn’t score enough to justify keep going with him.

MF: TRADE. His cash generation is non-existent. One day he’ll put it together and dominate a game. But that might not be for a while.

TO: TRADE. Has not rewarded those who kept the faith.

DB: SELL. There was hope in the Barossa but he backed it up with a 28.

Max Hall has been a good rookie pick. Picture: Mark Brake/Getty Images
Max Hall has been a good rookie pick. Picture: Mark Brake/Getty Images

Max Hall ($250,600 FWD/MID)

AP: TRADE. I count him a successful pick after making $131k but he’s one I’m prepared to part ways with. Watch the Saints team on Thursday with interest, Ross was very grumpy so expect changes.

TM: TRADE. Underrated rookie gem of this year. Has made more than $130k but with a Break Even of 38, this cash cow has just about run out of milk. If you hold, plan to trade next week unless he scores 70-plus.

Patch: CONSIDER. Ideally you’d be holding one more week but is probably one of the most likely candidates to move along.

STW: TRADE. Has made the cash required, bank it and upgrade.

MF: HOLD. For one more week. He might lose a bit of cash, but he might kick three goals and restart the generation. But I think he’s a hold mainly because there’s so many other trade options.

CW: HOLD: He hasn’t been great recently, but you could still squeeze a little value out of him .. Phillipou is only 1-2 weeks away, could be a straight swap.

TO: HOLD. Shouldn’t lose money this week, so give him another shot.

DB: SELL. Average is still below his Break Even but a tough match-up against the Lions this week means you can probably afford to trade.

Isaac Kako ($210,200 MID/FWD)

AP: HOLD. Has only made $60k and surely there is more juice in the lemon here – he just needs a three-goal game to get things rolling. Happy to keep him on the bench.

TM: HOLD. Has scored 55-plus in three of his five games and has an achievable Break Even of 31. Gut says he might provide a few highlights on Anzac Day.

STW: HOLD. It was always going to be a slow burn but he is playing and the Break Even is still achievable.

Patch: CONSIDER. “This’ll be the spike week where he kicks six, I can feel it in my bones” – me every week since round 1. I’m trading, but your mileage may vary.

MF: HOLD. Similar to Max Hall, there’s going to be a week he kicks three or four goals and makes a bunch of cash. But he’s a small forward and he was never going to make $100k in three weeks.

CW: HOLD: He’s the least of our worries for now.

TO: HOLD. Has only made owners $60k so far. Be patient and hope he can have a breakout game to get the cash gen rolling.

DB: HOLD. May be a spike score in him – could it be after an Anzac Day cameo?

SuperCoach AFL: Buy, Hold, Sell - Round 7 with The Phantom!

TRADED IN

Matt Carroll ($99,100 DEF)

AP: BUY. Chloe, who watches far more Carlton training than I consider healthy) has been talking about this guy all pre-season, and what do you know, he’s the only rookie on the table this week so let’s all join the fan club.

TM: BUY. He’s the new Kade Simpson – spindly, left-footed and ready to become a favourite for SuperCoach teams. Ranks fourth at the Blues with a kicking efficiency of 78 per cent after two games.

Patch: BUY. It’s him or bust this week.

STW: BUY. On the bubble, the scoring is good and he is cheap. You can make some serious cash from a rookie to fund upgrades.

MF: BUY. A $99k rookie who’s scoring not terrible? Perfect downgrade option. Don’t think too hard.

CW: BUY: Cowan should return through the VFL, and it feels like it’s Carroll’s spot for now. He finds targets inside 50 for fun, and recorded 12 kicks from 12 disposals in his first outing … we love to see it.

TO: BUY. The only rookie on the bubble I’m interested in this week.

DB: BUY. Lachie Cowan is a watch at selection, but we don’t really have any other choice but to buy and hope he keeps getting games. The signs have been good so far.

Matt Flynn ($261,900 RUC)

AP: BUY. Could be the best money train of the season if he stays in the team. Your guess is as good as mine on that front, but with rookies drying up it’s a punt we have to take.

TM: BUY. Projected to make $65k this week but it will more likely be at least $80k if he gets the nod at selection. Even Flynn doesn’t know if he’s the Eagles’ No.1 ruckman, so he’ll have owners stressed each week. But if he can hold his spot for 3-4 weeks he’ll make $200k+ and potentially be a straight swap to Rowan Marshall. We just need a favour from Mini McQualter.

Patch: BUY. My least confident “buy” verdict of all time but if he plays this week he makes bulk cash and I’m willing to take the risk of him being dropped after a week for the potential pay-off of a $200k quick cash boost.

STW: BUY. I don’t know if he is actually any good but that Break Even is too juicy and we need cash generation.

MF: BUY. But a cautious buy. I wouldn’t suggest this is a must-buy. He dominated last week but against a decent follow-up ruck rather than a great tap ruck. He’s got Lloyd Meek, Max Gawn and Toby Nankervis in his next three. And that’s if he holds his spot.

DB: BUY. Should make at least $130k and can get an unreliable rookie off your field. A win-win.

TO: CONSIDER. His job security is a huge risk. But the payoff could be massive.

Playing SuperCoach without Nick Daicos in your team is a lot less fun. Picture: Russell Freeman/AFL Photos via Getty Images
Playing SuperCoach without Nick Daicos in your team is a lot less fun. Picture: Russell Freeman/AFL Photos via Getty Images

Nick Daicos ($608,800 MID)

AP: BUY. Actually agonised a bit over this one – is it smarter to get someone cheaper like Connor Rozee from a cashed-up rookie rather than parting ways with a mid-pricer to get Nick? The problem is if I don’t get him now, I’m not sure when I will be able to.

TM: BUY. There’s no bad time to buy Nick Daicos. The scary thing for the AFL and SuperCoach teams who don’t own Daicos is he seems to have worked out how to bust a tag. Sam Durham awaits, but is he much hope of negating Nick?

Patch: BUY. The only one of the really expensive guys I recommend. If you can get to him without trading out a Clayton Oliver type, fire away. If you have to trade a Riley Bice or someone to get there, reconsider.

STW: BUY. Is breaking the tag and scoring like a madman. This could be the cheapest he is for a while.

MF: BUY. Ned Long has unlocked Daicos. Not that Daicos needed much unlocking. But his production is 8.8 points per quarter better when Long is on the field, compared to when he’s the sub.

CW: CONSIDER. If not now, when? It’s a valid question … if I didn’t desperately need to fix my ruck line, he would be in for me. I wouldn’t say to get him at all costs, but he is bound to keep increasing in price.

TO: BUY. A huge miss for those who didn’t jump on last week, like me!

DB: BUY. But don’t destroy your team to make it happen. Even Jack Sinclair, who started the season hot, will be crashing below $600k this week.

James Tunstill ($119,900 FWD/MID)

AP: PASS – for now. We’ll need a rookie to downgrade to next week.

TM: PASS. Why would you buy a rookie with questionable job security when they aren’t on the bubble? Could score 40 this week, be sub in round 8 and you’ll have egg on your face.

STW: PASS. Scoring looks good but low time on ground and Brisbane being stacked makes me worried.

Patch: PASS. Absolutely not bringing in a Lions guy off just one game. He looked good, but I need to see it again.

MF: CONSIDER. Not just yet. I don’t like going early on rookies. But definitely one for next week if he stays in the side.

Marcus Bontempelli is very good at football. Picture: Michael Klein
Marcus Bontempelli is very good at football. Picture: Michael Klein

Marcus Bontempelli ($681,000 MID)

AP: PASS. How is anyone finding the cash for this move? We want to try to make an upgrade every week from here and this would derail a few weeks’ worth of trades. I will look to bring him in after the Dogs’ round 12 bye.

TM: BUY. Returned with a casual 100-point half against the Saints to remind us he’s the top dog in SuperCoach. Rarely drops by much more than $50k, so it’s going to be a long and painful wait hoping he gets close to $600k.

Patch: AVOID. He might average 140 for the next three weeks but I don’t know how anyone’s getting to him without blowing their teams up. Go hunting value.

STW: BUY. If you can afford it then I like just going all out and getting in the Bont. But he is expensive and does he play more forward with Darcy out?

MF: CONSIDER. Welcome back to the king. What a way to come back into footy. I’m not buying him just yet, he’s way too expensive. But watch and wait, he’s a must-have eventually.

CW: PASS. I also can’t believe I’m saying this. He, too, is bound to get more expensive, but I would prefer to chase value this week in the form of a fallen premo.

TO: PASS. Just too expensive at the moment. He should drop at some stage, right?

DB. BUY. Wow, much be nice! If you’ve got the cash, go for it.

Corey Durdin ($208,900 FWD)

AP: PASS. Scored well against North Melbourne but way too much to pay for an unreliable small forward.

TM: PASS. Why would you buy a rookie for more than $200k with a history of injuries? And that’s before mentioning that he’s a small forward. Bet he scores under 50 against Geelong.

STW: PASS. North were garbage. He isn’t scoring that well against Geelong.

Patch: PASS. Refer to Chloe Williams’ answer on Breaking Even With Al Paton.

MF: PASS. Small forward at $208k that’s put up a couple of good scores? Yeah nah, that’s not going to last. Not for me.

CW: PASS. His role hasn’t changed, he’s just had some great games! McKay coming back will change the forward dynamics … but he will definitely be in the 23 if you’re just wanting a bench rookie.

TO: PASS. Carlton don’t play West Coast or North Melbourne every week.

DB: PASS. Is in career-best form but it was against West Coast and North Melbourne.

Corey Durdin has kicked six goals in the past two rounds. Picture: Michael Klein
Corey Durdin has kicked six goals in the past two rounds. Picture: Michael Klein

Elijah Hewett ($188,300 FWD/MID)

AP: PASS. I’d be rapt if I started him but not sure it’s worth paying nearly $200k now when he’s already missed a few games with injuries.

TM: BUY. That second half against the Bombers was electric (17 disposals, two goals and five score involvements). Suddenly it makes sense why West Coast has been so patient with him. Prone to a low score but should have at least $100k to make from here.

Patch: BUY. Don’t expect 97s every week but he looked good. My No.2 rookie trade-in this week.

STW: BUY. Still cheap enough to bring him in if you don’t have him considering some of the other rookie issues at the moment.

MF: CONSIDER. His midfield role was very exciting, but I’m mindful the carousel that is West Coast’s engine room..Tom Gross as the sub, Clay Hall getting dropped ... do we have short memories?

CW: CONSIDER. If you need a downgrade target. He’s shaping to be one of those slower burns, who can provide a great spike score from time to time to keep the money flowing.

TO: PASS. One breakout half of football isn’t enough to get me on board. He could make some nice coin but after trading him out I can’t go back there.

DB: BUY. A high impact midfielder, but don’t expect 97 every week. With a Break Even of -, you could wait a week for when his sub-affected score drops out.

Christian Petracca ($481,600 MID/FWD)

AP: BUY. I won’t be buying him but only because I got in early and started him. That hasn’t paid off, but a big game is looming, possibly as early as Thursday night, and you can all get him for $70k less than what I paid.

TM: BUY. But just a warning that I am also likely buying and as my career-low 46k rank would suggest, I am not having a good season. The last time he went seven successive games without a SuperCoach ton was 2019, and I’ll have the VC on him Thursday night. He’s due a 140 and back playing big midfield minutes.

Patch: BUY. Cheap as chips and with a dream run looming, we could have only dreamed of this trade-in option in February. Don’t look the gift horse in the mouth.

STW: BUY. I’m still not sure it’s a massive slam dunk but Petracca is very cheap for what he can do.

MF: BUY. If you’re buying him to get him back to the 120-point midfielder he once was, you might be disappointed. But he’s a high-ceiling forward that’s $480k.

CW: BUY. I would if I could. He’s bound to continue improving as he works his way into the season, and the price point is great.

TO: CONSIDER. It’s a hopeful pick given Trac is yet to ton this season. Your bringing him in on potential, not form.

DB: BUY. Prime match-ups against Richmond and West Coast and his midfield time is on the rise.

Christian Petracca is back in the midfield after earning FWD-MID status in SuperCoach. Picture: Morgan Hancock/Getty Images
Christian Petracca is back in the midfield after earning FWD-MID status in SuperCoach. Picture: Morgan Hancock/Getty Images

Lachie Whitfield ($609,800 DEF)

AP: PASS. I want him in my final team but has a couple of tougher opponents coming up so hopefully I can get him for under $600k in a few weeks.

TM: BUY. Watching him run around without an opponent and have 39 disposals against Adelaide was sickening. Destined to be a top-six defender and currently has seven more disposals than anyone else in the AFL. Still not sure if the hangover I had on Monday was from too many Easter red wines or crying about Adelaide paying him no attention.

Patch: CONSIDER. He’s expensive, hey. And there are a lot of other cheap guys lying around. I’m not going to say don’t do it if you need a premium defender, but ...

STW: BUY. An absolute gun. Just racks up the ball for the Giants.

MF: CONSIDER. He’s having an amazing season, but I don’t like spending that much money on a defender. Here’s hoping he cops a tag one of these weeks.

CW: CONSIDER. He has been a great addition for me – but I would chase the value this week, which is mainly found in the form of Flynn, Petracca or a fallen mid.

TO: BUY. He will be a top-six defender and looks set to float around $600k most of the year.

DB: BUY. Him and Lachie Ash have played kick-to-kick all year long.

George Hewett ($611,100 MID)

AP: PASS. The No.1 scorer in SuperCoach after six rounds would be an amazing POD, but does he keep it up? If I’m paying over $600k he needs to be called Daicos, Butters or Bontempelli.

TM: PASS. I think. He’s absolutely flying and for Carlton’s sake I hope it continues. But history would suggest he’s a long shot to be a top-eight midfielder and you’re paying an absolute premium for him.

Patch: PASS. The run won’t last, but if you’ve started him or brought him in already, well done.

STW: PASS. Geez, he’s playing well, but I’d feel safer with a big gun at that price.

MF: CONSIDER. Did not expect this name to be leading the way at the start of the season. But he’s absolutely starring. I’m scared, though.

CW: PASS. Sorry, George. He’s been incredible, and hopefully will continue to be – but there should come a time where his price is a bit more affordable. Jump on him then and celebrate with some carrot cake …

TO: CONSIDER. He’s not going to get tagged with Cripps and Walsh in that Carlton team. Why can’t he keep doing what he’s doing? Still wary given the price tag.

DB: BUY. Has been criminally underrated to start the season, with Matt Kennedy’s exit allowing him to thrive as an offensive midfielder.
