Kick-in points help Collingwood’s Brayden Maynard, Sydney’s Jake Lloyd boost KFC SuperCoach scoring

Remember when shorter quarters were supposed to halt Jake Lloyd’s KFC SuperCoach scoring? The Sydney defender has defied predictions to remain a premium and there’s a major reason why. Is he in your team?

Brayden Maynard has enjoyed one of the sharpest KFC SuperCoaches rises of the year, emerging as one of the must-have defenders of 2020.

Last season was the Collingwood defender’s best in KFC SuperCoach, averaging 79.9 and posting four hundreds.

Maynard has already exceeded that this year, hitting triple figures in five consecutive games to start the campaign.

The 23-year-old is the third-ranked defender for overall points (568) after five rounds, behind only Carlton co-captain Sam Docherty (606) and GWS’ Nick Haynes (570).

Maynard’s scoring will benefit from the absence of Jeremy Howe, who he shared kick-in duties with to Round 4.

Of the top-five defenders for overall points, four are regular kick-in takers.

Docherty has taken 20 kick-ins (55.6 per cent) for Carlton, while Maynard (38.5 per cent), Jake Lloyd (50 per cent) and Caleb Daniel (42 per cent) have been regulars in the role for their respective clubs.

Players are awarded the maximum four points for a long kick-in from the goalsquare to advantage or if they play on and achieve an effective kick.

This is significant in particular for Lloyd, who has played on every kick-in he has taken this season and has an overall kicking efficiency of 76.1 per cent.

“You get one point for an effective kick-in from within the goalsquare, but you get four points for an effective kick if you play on and are in general play,” Champion Data’s Fantasy Freako said.

“You lose four points for a kick clanger regardless whether it’s from within the goalsquare or in general play.”

Maynard has played on from nine of the 10 kick-ins he has taken and has one of the best kicking efficiency rates of any defender in the league at 83.3 per cent.

KFC SuperCoach does not reward ineffective kicks, which are worth zero points, while a kick-in clanger results in a loss of four points.

Of course, being a regular kick-in taker does not guarantee a spike in KFC SuperCoach points.

Adelaide’s Luke Brown has played on from 17 of his 20 kick-ins this year and has a kicking efficiency of 86.5 per cent, yet only has a KFC SuperCoach average of 64.4.

However, if you’re stuck on which defenders to target or unconvinced whether a player such as Maynard can maintain their hot start, kick-ins are an important factor to consider.

The statistic also goes some way to explaining the rise of GWS backman Aidan Corr to KFC SuperCoach prominence.

Corr started 2020 at $223,700 after averaging 51.5 in four games last year.

The key defender has taken more kick-ins than any other Giant this year and his scoring has spiked as a result, averaging 80 points a game and not scoring less than 60.
