KFC SuperCoach Round 2 rage trades: Big guns in firing line after slow starts to 2020

A team full of left-field and downright bizarre selections has claimed the weekly KFC SuperCoach prize with an incredible score. See the team plus market watch and this week’s rage trades.

We always knew 2020 was going to be a strange KFC SuperCoach season, but this is ridiculous.

The top-scoring team of Round 2 — claiming the weekly $1000 prize — is full of players who appear in hardly any other teams.

Making Lachie Neale captain was a popular (and smart) move but from there selection in Flyin’ high Ryan takes a turn for the bizarre.

Ignoring last year’s top two rucks Brodie Grundy and Reily O’Brien, coach Paul instead opted for Todd Goldstein and Reilly O’Brien — and was rewarded with scores of 164 and 161.

SCROLL DOWN FOR THIS WEEK’S RAGE TRADES AND MARKET WATCH

Passing on the most popular player in the game, Tiger Marlion Pickett, Paul’s team includes Brisbane livewire Charlie Cameron, who scored 118 against Fremantle and is in just 7 per cent of more than 160,000 KFC SuperCoach teams. West Coast midfielder Andrew Gaff (137) is in 3 per cent and injury-prone Magpie Taylor Adams (131), is in 1 per cent of sides.

Other left-field picks include James Aish (2 per cent), Jake Lever (2 per cent), Jordan Ridley (4 per cent) and Port Adelaide’s Trent McKenze (4 per cent).

Not all of them worked out but overall he did enough to score a huge 2557 for the round.

It just goes to show backing your gut can pay off.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: MAX GAWN

Gawn was the top-ranked player for the round after scoring 184 KFC SuperCoach points in Melbourne’s thrilling win over Carlton. He finished with 21 disposals (18 effective), 11 contested possessions, three clearances and five tackles. Gawn also won 28 hitouts against his direct opponent, of which nine were to the direct advantage of a teammate.

CHAMPION DATA MARKET WATCH

BACHAR HOULI

Houli didn’t miss a beat against the Magpies as he helped himself to 111 KFC SuperCoach points from 81 per cent game time. He won most of his disposals on the outside, recording an equal game-high 24 disposals on the spread. Houli also won a team-high 19 uncontested possessions and gained 344 metres.

GARY ABLETT

It was a vintage display from Ablett – scoring 130 KFC SuperCoach points, of which 104 were recorded in the forward half of the ground. He finished with 21 disposals, 410 metres gained, 14 uncontested possessions and six inside-50s. Ablett also impacted the scoreboard, recording three score assists, two goals and seven score involvements.

LACHIE NEALE

Neale led the Lions to their first victory of the season on the back of a game-high 171 SuperCoach points. He dominated all facets of the game, finishing with 28 effective disposals, 17 contested possessions and eight clearances from 92 per cent game time. He also chipped in with two crucial goals and had six score involvements.

ROOKIE WATCH: MATT ROWELL

Rowell was best afield in only his second match at AFL level – racking up 171 KFC SuperCoach points from 75 per cent game time. He finished with team-highs of 26 disposals, 14 contested possessions and seven tackles, while he was also busy at the stoppages – generating five clearances. Rowell kicked two goals and had one score assist.

ROUND 2 RAGE TRADES

Paul Dunn

After such a long lay-off, we finally had some footy to watch at the weekend.

But with footy back that means that there were plenty of opportunities for players to disappoint us and test out KFC SuperCoach emotions!

Who should we be rage trading out this week?

BOOT HIM

Toby Greene $492,800 FWD — 47 points

After a 108 in round 1, Greene struggled in the game against the Roos with just 11 touches including nine handballs. Greene can do this, be up one week then down the next. If you are prepared for the rollercoaster then climb aboard but at his price you may want to look for someone that has a bit more consistency.

Heath Shaw $421,100 DEF — 47

This is the second low score we have seen from Shaw this season and while it isn’t clear whether he has had a role change or not, he is certainly not scoring as well as we are used to seeing. He only had six possessions and took only one mark. He isn’t worth the risk in your side this season with form like this.

Jordan Dawson $446,000 DEF/FWD - 45

Dawson was a very popular player in the pre-season and he didn’t deliver for us this week. He had 84 in Round 1, which was OK, but we need that to be his minimum score. You may want to give him one more week but this would be his last chance for me.

Tom Doedee $273,700 DEF — 39

The Adelaide defender found himself in nearly 10 per cent of teams on his return from a knee injury, but those coaches would be scratching their heads now about whether or not to keep him. Doedee only managed 39 points in the big Showdown loss for the Crows. You may want to give him one more week, but he is going to need a big score to redeem himself and make some value for $273,700.

Tom Doedee’s return didn’t go to plan for thousands of coaches who jumped on the Crows defender.

Rowan Marshall $569,400 RUCK — 65

The introduction of Paddy Ryder to the side has seen a decrease in Marshall’s scoring. Many of the rucks in the competition have had a boost in their scoring with these shorter games but Marshall seems to be going the other direction. You may want to look to move him to one of the solo ruckmen.

Jack Riewoldt $351,700 FWD — 18

Riewodt had a very quiet night with only six touches and two marks against Collingwood. The concern is that he spent the second-most time on ground for the Tigers at 95 per cent. So, he had plenty of opportunity to get the footy but wasn’t the key target in attack. This trend started last season with Tom Lynch (who scored 113) starting to be the dominant forward at Punt Rd.

West Coast’s key forwards — Josh Kennedy (56) and Jack Darling (53)

Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling are too much of a risk to have in your side. They both rely on kicking bags of goals to score well and when the Eagles don’t have a big win they struggle. Key forwards are rarely a good selection in SuperCoach for this very reason.

Darcy MacPherson $422,500 FWD/MID — 65

It might seem a bit harsh after his score of 65 this week, but pre-season bolter MacPherson isn’t going to get the big scores that you need from him at more than $400,000. He was a risk to pick at the start of the season and it’s time to cash in before he drops further in value.

Nic Newman suffered a serious knee injury on Saturday.
Nic Newman suffered a serious knee injury on Saturday.

Injury watch

Stefan Martin $458,700 RUCK

Martin looked like his day was over in the third quarter before coming back on, but he really looked to be still suffering from that PCL issue that he suffered earlier in the season in round 1. After he came back on he really didn’t jump into the ruck contests and relied on bodywork. He may come up OK for Round 3 but this looks to be a lingering issue for him so hold him with caution.

Nic Newman $456,400 DEF

Newman went down very early in the game with a knee injury and has been ruled out for the rest of the season. Only 2000 KFC SuperCoach classic teams have selected him, but Newman has been a popular defender in SuperCoach draft.

Rory Sloane $554,300 MID

Crows captain Sloane didn’t play much of the second half in the Showdown after a corked thigh early in the third term. Adelaide has an eight-day break before its next game, so he may get up. But keep a close eye on the injury report as you may need to move him on.

Lachie Neale has scored more than 150 points in both games this season.

Buy Him

Lachie Neale $693,800 MID — 171 points

Our very own Tim Michell tweeted that Neale will be the KFC SuperCoach player of the season and this performance was very hard to go past. He was everywhere and really set up the game in the first half. His 29 touches were at an incredible 96 per cent disposal efficiency. On top of that he also slotted two goals. He should be a priority for 58 per cent of teams who don’t have him, but that won’t beeasy after his price jumped $35k.

Max Gawn $702,900 RUCK — 184 points

One round and eight weeks is a long time in footy. After the West Coast game (Gawn scored 93) many SuperCoaches wanted to trade out the Melbourne captain. But he showed us this round why he is one of the best two ruckmen in the competition. His price will rise for a few weeks now so you may need to wait a couple of weeks to get him in or find a way to pay more than $700,000.

Jeremy Howe $485,100 DEF — 126 points

Howe was one of the players most coaches were trying to get in prior to this round and he proved why with 126 points. He has a proven scoring history and guys who can score like that in defence are hard to find. If his price hasn’t jumped too much you might want to try and bring him in even though you didn’t get him for bottom dollar.

Bachar Houli has a dominant KFC SuperCoach record at the MCG.
Bachar Houli has a dominant KFC SuperCoach record at the MCG.

Bachar Houli $571,600 DEF — 111 points

After missing Round 1 due to injury, Houli returned against Collingwood with the second-best score for the Tigers behind Tom Lynch’s 113. The rebounding defender is a proven scorer and he likes to chip the ball around the backline. When he does that, he can rack up the points very quickly. He has a strong record at the MCG too.

Joel Selwood $484,700 MID — 151 points

If Patrick Dangerfield continues to get tagged as he was on Friday night, Selwood could be an option at a much lower price. The Cats skipper had plenty of the footy against Hawthorn with 17 of his disposals contested. He won’t score like this every week but if he can settle somewhere near the 120 range he’ll be good value.

Michael Walters $570,000 FWD-MID — 148 points

While Nat Fyfe is the go-to guy at the Dockers, smooth mover Walters isn’t far behind. He kicked two goals and had plenty of the footy against Brisbane. He has been a concern for coaches in recent years with injury and suspension but his current form is too hard to ignore.

Zach Merrett $597,300 MID — 159 points

This was his second 110-plus score of the season. With 29 touches he had the equal-most in the game with Jake Lloyd. Merrett hasn’t been talked about much this season and has an ownership of just 3 per cent and with his price he would be a good value recruit.

Max Gawn was the dominant player of Round 2 with 184 points against Carlton.
