KFC SuperCoach Rewind: The best performances from every Round 3 AFL fixture
Need your stats fix this weekend? The Phantom looks back at the best KFC SuperCoach performances from every one of the AFL’s Round 3 fixtures.
Supercoach
Don't miss out on the headlines from Supercoach. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Did you have Heath Shaw as your SuperCoach captain in Round 9, 2016?
Many did, including the round’s winning team, and it’s a week they are unlikely to forget any time soon.
Jeremy Cameron booted five goals and Stephen Coniglio had 32 disposals as GWS won their sixth game on-the-trot, beating the Bulldogs by 25 points at Giants Stadium.
But the match will be remembered for Shaw’s incredible individual performance.
In his 222nd career game, the veteran defender tallied 38 disposals, 14 marks and eight intercept possessions in a prolific display across half-back.
Of Shaw’s 38 disposals, 36 were kicks, the most ever recorded.
Even more astounding, every single one was effective.
And they weren’t just short and backwards in the Giants’ back-half either, with Shaw registering 1094 metres gained, the second-highest mark on record.
Shaw finished with a career-high 200 points to become the only defender to post a SuperCoach double-ton since 2008.
It’s also the highest score in any GWS-Western Bulldogs fixture.
THE SEARCH FOR A SUPERCOACH LEGEND BEGINS
Here are the best performances from each of the other eight Round 3 matches.
Carlton v Essendon
Chris Judd (Carl) – 196 points
Round 18, 2011
Bomber Ben Howlett tried to restrict Judd’s influence at the MCG in 2011 but, like most who tried over the years, he couldn’t. In what many say was the star midfielder’s best performance in a Carlton jumper, Judd tallied 33 disposals, 20 contested possessions and 15 score involvements. Andrew Walker took that mark over Jake Carlisle and Eddie Betts kicked eight goals but Judd again took home the three Brownlow votes that night.
Hawthorn v Collingwood
Scott Pendlebury (Coll) – 184 points
Round 14, 2015
Despite a 10-point loss to the Hawks, the Collingwood skipper starred, tallying 37 disposals, 20 contested possessions and 10 clearances in a clinical display. He was a star after the final siren, too. Along with Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge and both coaches, Nathan Buckley and Alastair Clarkson, Pendelbury instigated a moving – and unified – post-match tribute to the late Phil Walsh.
Adelaide v Brisbane
Rory Sloane (Adel) – 172
Round 20, 2014
The Crows surged into the top-eight with a convincing 105-point win over the Lions in Round 2. And with Scott Thompson missing, it was Rory Sloane who led the way with 28 disposals, 11 tackles and two goals. Losses to Richmond and North Melbourne, by a combined 17 points, in the following two weeks ended their finals’ hopes, however.
North Melbourne v Port Adelaide
Todd Goldstein (NM) – 176
Round 22, 2019
The North Melbourne big man wound back the clock last season, recording his highest average since 2015. And it was on the back of a dominant end to the year. Goldstein posted eight consecutive SuperCoach tons between Round 15 and 22, with his 176-point performance against Paddy Ryder and the Power the best of the lot.
West Coast v Geelong
Dean Cox (WC) – 190
Round 20, 2012
In the five-point win over the Cats in Perth, Dean Cox and his young ruck partner Nic Naitanui dominated. In his 246th senior appearance, Cox tallied 23 disposals, nine hitouts-to-advantage, three goals and 190 SuperCoach points. Naitanui, playing his 72nd game, was equally as influential, finishing with 18 disposals, two goals and 153 points. That’s 343 SuperCoach points between – no wonder Geelong coach Chris Scott hates ruckmen.

Melbourne v Fremantle
Matthew Pavlich (Freo) – 179
Round 16, 2008
With his side 29 points down at quarter-time and ready to enter a three-way race for the wooden spoon, skipper Matthew Pavlich inspired – as he often did – a Fremantle charge. The six-time All-Australian finished with five goals from 28 disposals and nine marks, helping his side to a come-from-behind victory which saw the Dockers put themselves a game clear of West Coast and the Demons on the ladder.
St Kilda v Richmond
Jack Riewoldt (Rich) – 189 points
Round 10, 2012
In a shootout at Marvel Stadium, Riewoldt was the difference, booting a season-high eight majors, among 14 score involvements, as the Tigers held on for an eight-point victory.
Gold Coast v Sydney
Gary Ablett (GC) – 170 points
Round 18, 2012
Gary Ablett has dominated every side in the competition at some point, there’s no arguing that. But some of his biggest performances have come against Sydney with the Little Master posting two of his five career SuperCoach double-tons against the Swans. And it didn’t change much when he moved clubs with Ablett tallying 42 disposals and 170 points in his first non-injury affected clash with Sydney as a Gold Coast Sun.
