If you asked Max Gawn at the start of 2021 which he would prefer - being a premiership captain or maintaining his crown as the top-priced player in KFC SuperCoach, we think we know the answer.
But at least he can console himself with the premiership cup.
Gawn topped the rich list at the start of 2021 with an eye-watering KFC SuperCoach price of $751,400, but there is no $700k player in 2022.
Bulldog Jack Macrae falls $100 short of that milestone but is the most expensive player in the game – reward for four consecutive seasons with an average of 123 points a game or more, with last season’s 128.6 a personal best.
St Kilda talisman Jack Steele is the second-most expensive player after backing up his amazing 2020 breakout season with a 126 average, with a huge bolter at No.3.
Touk Miller caught the attention of some KFC SuperCoach players when he lifted his average from 85 to 106 in 2020, but few saw his 2021 season coming – 16 straight 100-plus scores from Round 6 and a season average of 124.5.
Then come two Melbourne premiership heroes including Gawn, one of four rucks priced at $627,000 or higher. Docker Sean Darcy has taken the No.2 slot – and No.7 overall – making for an interesting debate over that position leading into the 2022 season.
The Demons have three players in the top 20 price list, while the Bulldogs and Essendon have two each. The only clubs without a player on the list are GWS, North Melbourne and Richmond. In a sign of how far the Tigers fell in 2021, their top-priced player is Jayden Short ($535,200 DEF), who is the 50th most expensive overall.
Meanwhile, there are a host of potential bargains on offer for KFC SuperCoach players hunting for value in 2022, headlined by stars sidelined by injury for all or most of last season.
Here are some of our top picks.
