Herald Sun reporter Chris Cavanagh picks his 2020 KFC SuperCoach team

Rowan Marshall took SuperCoach by storm last season, but he has been largely forgotten in 2020. And a Tiger should also be getting a lot more love. Both are in Chris Cavanagh’s squad. SEE HIS TEAM

How to KFC SuperCoach

Sorry, Max Gawn.

I left you out of my KFC SuperCoach team last year and I can’t squeeze you in again in 2020.

The problem is not you – it’s the hefty price tag the backroom boffins at SuperCoach HQ have set you.

It means the next big thing in the ruck – St Kilda’s Rowan Marshall – is available for a whopping $98,400 less.

In just his third season, Marshall was a revelation last year and his upward trajectory looks set to continue. The big Saint played 20 games, averaging 110.2 points, to finish second in the Saints’ best-and-fairest.

Think that average is impressive? Consider this.

Marshall’s second half of the season was his best, averaging 118.7 points across the final 11 games. During that period, he scored below 109 points just twice, with a top score of 161 points in Round 15.

The counterargument to signing up Marshall in SuperCoach is the Saints’ recruitment of Paddy Ryder.

Don’t worry about that.

Marshall was the fourth-ranked ruckman in the competition last season.

Ryder ranked 16th playing for Port Adelaide and was dropped to the seconds as part of a five-week period out of the side in the second half of the season.

Between Marshall and Collingwood superstar Brodie Grundy, I think I have a winning ruck combination to build a side around.

Greater Western Sydney’s Josh Kelly isn’t proving a popular pick this season, but I can’t work out why. Talk to the Giants and they will tell you he hardly had a pre-season the past two years, but has barely missed a beat this summer.

Likewise, Richmond’s Sydney Stack doesn’t appear to be getting a lot of love.

Yes, he’s an awkward price at $435,100 – but for mine there is still plenty of upside left in a player who lit it up in his debut season before injury stuck late in the season.

Likewise, the Hawks think Chad Wingard has plenty more to give after taking time to learn their system in his first year at the club last year.

Some senior Waverley Park insiders believe he is setting himself for his first All-Australian campaign since 2015. In that season Wingard averaged 97.8 KFC SuperCoach points for Port Adelaide – far more than the 75.9 points he averaged for Hawthorn last season.

Who is my best buy?

It’s hard to go past Essendon’s Devon Smith at his $335,800 price tag.

Injuries limited Smith last season but he is now fit again and is a player who averaged 97.9 KFC SuperCoach points in 2018 with remarkable consistency.

Lock him in.
