As part of The Advertiser Media All-Stars league, South Australia’s top media personalities are back in 2018 to take on their mates – in most cases, anyway – in Australia’s biggest fantasy football game; SuperCoach.
Round 3 of the AFL season marked the start of the head-to-head league matches in SuperCoach and there was some big clashes in the Media All-Stars league.
MATCH OF THE ROUND
Graham Cornes 2212 def Kane Cornes 2033
A Father-son battle was the headline act in the first round of head-to-head action at the weekend.
Last year’s league champion, Graham Cornes, kicked off his premiership defence with a convincing win over youngest son, and The Advertiser colleague, Kane.
While both teams enjoyed the big scores from midfield stars Tom Mitchell and Nat Fyfe, Docker Michael Walters’ 132 points against the Gold Coast was the key to Graham’s 169-point victory.
“I was always confident. Attack will always prevail over defence. Experience over impetuous youth,” Graham said after his side’s impressive display.
Although delighted with the end result, we understand Graham voiced his concern over the existence of a match committee at Kane’s team prior to the clash.
The match committee in question decided on the big inclusion of Charlie Dixon, at the expense of Hawk James Sicily, during the week and it looked a great move after the Power star’s opening two rounds.
But his 57 points against the Lions on Saturday had Kane playing catch-up early on, meaning Cornes Snr had little to worry about.
“I was worried, however, that he was getting outside assistance but with friends like that who needs enemies?” Graham asked.
AROUND THE GROUNDS
Lion Stefan Martin’s big afternoon against the Power lead Channel 9’s Tom Rehn to victory over FIVEaa’s Will Goodings, while Channel 7’s Jessica Adamson got her 2018 season off to a flying start with a nail-biting 20-point win over The Advertiser’s Andrew Capel.
Last year’s grand finalist, Max Burford from Channel 10, got the points against The Advertiser’s Richard Earle. But only just. Earle’s final score suffered heavily from Todd Goldstein’s 57 and Fremantle rookie Andrew Brayshaw’s 32.
The Advertiser’s Peter Dawe posted a big 2,273 points to defeat Hit107’s Cat Lynch, whose big scores were offset by some disappointing returns from midfielders Luke Davies-Uniacke and David Armitage.
In other matches, Nova 919’s Jarrod Walsh ran into The Advertiser’s Antimo Iannella and his round-high 2,288 points. The Phantom limped over the line against Herald Sun’s Mark Robinson, while The Advertiser’s Mel Mansell and Paul Ashenden also enjoyed opening-week victories.
THE WEEK AHEAD
The Round 4 match-up between Hit107’s Amos Gil and Max Burford and Kane Cornes’ clash with Jessica Adamson will be intriguing but the match of the round will, again, feature reigning premier Graham Cornes as he goes head-to-head with Tom Rehn.
